Okay? She had money, she had a husband who was providing for her, she had doctors and therapists, she lived a comfortable and luxurious life. What more "help" could she be given? What more was anyone supposed to do? She had more "help" than 99.9 percent of the people on the globe. At a certain point you have to deal with your shit and move on. The entire world can't stop for your sake. Clancy couldn't deal with that fact -- the fact that the world didn't stop for her -- so she simply executed all of her children. Selfish, evil witch. Bad take. Postpartum depression is mostly sleep deprivation and stress. I just had my fourth baby in my bedroom and–you just don’t understand the hormonal shift if you’re a man (or a woman who hasn’t had a baby). You do not understand the sleep deprivation from nursing every 2 hours after pushing out a baby and being pregnant. It’s on another level. If you add stress on top of that… boom.

I had severe postpartum depression with my first. There were multiple reasons for that. And I’ve had DMER with the next 2 (although seems like I don’t with this one!)

The waves of horror that accompany postpartum depression and DMER weren’t caused by selfishness, and I don’t think that’s the most common cause at all.

Sleep deprivation is likely the main cause. Plus lack of help (causing sleep deprivation), stress and isolation. With my first I didn’t get more than 2 hours of sleep at a time for months. I didn’t know what I was doing, and wasn’t supported. That’s pretty normal nowadays.

The best thing you can do for someone who’s unstable postpartum is make them sleep. Get them some help. Not pills. Sleep.

Changing a failing student’s grade not only happens in Tennessee, it happened to me in Toronto in 1990. I had newly arrived from Johannesburg and was working part-time as a research officer at a university. While waiting to take my exams to register as a dietitian, a colleague gave me the opportunity to teach nutrition two nights a week at a college. One student came to the first class, then the exam. She failed terribly. She then sued the college for discrimination against a young mother, so they had to pass her. I was shocked. You could never do this in South Africa.
