Traveling across Africa with an African passport is a nightmare because of the crazy visa requirements.

Many Africans complain about how hard it is to get visas to other African countries. But before we protest, we should research what our own countries require from the citizens of those same nations.

At the Africa Bitcoin Conference in Mauritius last year, a Nigerian national asked why Nigerians are only allowed two weeks in Mauritius while other nationals get 60 days. I asked a simple question: how many days can Mauritians stay in Nigeria without a visa? Zero. Nigeria does not extend visa free access to Mauritian citizens at all.

We cannot demand generosity abroad while practicing restriction at home. If we want easier movement across Africa, the conversation must begin with reciprocity and self examination. It starts with putting pressure on our own governments to cancel visa requirements for other African countries.
