Today, we celebrate Portugal Day, observed each year on June 10 in honor of Luís de Camões, Portugal’s national poet, and the anniversary of his death in 1580. The day recognizes Portugal’s history, culture, achievements, and the contributions of Portuguese communities around the world.
Carteret is proud to be home to a strong Portuguese community whose contributions have helped shape our Borough for generations through their businesses, community involvement, and dedication to family and tradition.
Wishing everyone celebrating a happy Portugal Day.

Today, we remember the 34 American servicemen who lost their lives aboard the USS Liberty on June 8, 1967, when the ship was brutally attacked by the IDF in international waters off the Sinai Peninsula. We also honor the 171 who were wounded.
They were serving our country, yet the controversy and cover-up continues to this day. The loss remains a painful chapter in our nation’s history. May we continue to remember their names, their service, and the families who carried that loss long after that day.
Today marks the 82nd anniversary of D-Day, one of the most significant military operations in history and a pivotal moment in the Allied effort to liberate Europe during World War II.
On June 6, 1944, Allied troops landed on the beaches of Normandy, facing overwhelming odds in the fight against tyranny. Their courage, sacrifice, and determination helped secure the freedoms we continue to enjoy today.
As we remember the heroes of D-Day, we honor their service and reflect on the enduring values of freedom, democracy, and selfless sacrifice that they fought to defend.

Although Sunday’s Memorial Day Parade was canceled due to the weather, I still want to recognize this year’s Grand Marshal, Frank Roche.
Frank is a proud National Guard veteran and a longtime Carteret resident who has served both his country and our community with distinction. He has been ill, and I ask the Carteret community to keep him in your thoughts and prayers and join me in wishing him a full and speedy recovery.
It is an honor to recognize Frank as this year’s Memorial Day Parade Grand Marshal and to thank him for his service and dedication.

We honor those who never came home, the families who continue to carry their loss, and the freedoms made possible through their sacrifice.
Their courage, service, and legacy will never be forgotten.
Thank you to everyone who came out this morning for our 8 AM Memorial Day services at Waterfront Park and Wreath Lane as we paid tribute to the service members who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our freedoms.

We will continue today’s services at 12 noon at Soldiers and Sailors Park in front of our monument, under the tents, for a brief tribute to the fallen.
Due to the weather, the 1 PM Memorial Day Parade has been canceled.
As we go through the day, I hope everyone takes a moment to remember those who gave their lives for the freedoms we sometimes overlook in our daily lives.
