Before you write a single prompt in Claude Code, do these 5 things. Your session will be 3x more useful.
1. Write a CLAUDE md file. It goes in your project root. Tell Claude your tech stack, naming conventions, what it should never do, and what patterns you prefer. It reads this on every session start.
2. Define your data model before touching UI. Entity shapes, relationships, and indexes should exist as a document before the first component is written. Retrofitting a schema is always painful.
3. Break your feature into tasks before you start coding it. "Build the OKR tracker" is a bad prompt. "Create the Objective model with fields: title, owner_id, quarter, status" is a good one.
4. Keep a running decisions md file. Every architectural call — why you chose this auth library, why you went with this DB schema — write it down. Claude drifts without context. This file is your anchor.
5. Commit before every major Claude session. You will want to roll back. The question is whether you've made it possible.
Specification isn't overhead. It's the thing that makes fast sustainable.
