Shortly after sunset and dinner at a nice restaurant in Cancun we ordered an @Uber, but as we got in a group of guys from the taxi mafia surrounded the car and then attacked the driver while we were in the backseat.
The driver remained calm even as he was punched through the window. One guy reached into the car (I think to try and pull his keys out) as they all repeatedly threatened him for doing a pick up in their zone.
The smart thing to do probably would’ve been to jump out but instead I rolled down my window and tried to explain it was my fault for calling the Uber, and get them to let us go. Mostly I just didn’t want the driver to feel alone and I had no idea what they’d do to him if we ran off.
I feel shaken but relieved it didn’t turn out worse. It’s insane how fast things can go from great to terrifying.
We gave the driver a big tip but getting harassed and assaulted is awful, and is a brutal reminder of what many people endure around the world while simply trying to earn a living because of systemic corruption and greed.
What a crazy ride.
