Today marks the 30th anniversary of the passing of one of my favorite artists and Tejano’s brightest star that now shines over us, Grammy award winning Selena Quintanilla-Pérez.

What I’ll always appreciate about Selena’s career and artistry is her consistent acknowledgement of how Black musicianship shaped her dancing and singing.

From her Black bandmates & dancers to her covering the likes of Janet Jackson, Ralph Tresvant, & Michael Jackson, to her starting her last concert in Houston’s Astrodome with a disco medley very much honoring Donna Summer, to her devotion to evolving Cumbia which has African, Taino, Mexican, and Colombian roots, her deep appreciation and love are still felt even 30 years later.

May she rest in heavenly peace 🕊️
