I was surprised and really honoured when I was told about this prestigious Chambers Africa Awards 2025 award for Outstanding Contribution to legal profession for my work in media and broadcasting law. I am honoured and privileged. I say more on my Linked-In profile 1/2
The real value in being relentless with the PAIA requests, is that they set judicial precedents that in future not just journalists, but the wider public can use to access information on the state. Thank you @Dariomilo and the team at @webberwentzel

Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water on issue of prior restraints, it seems that a South African court has not only granted a prior restraint but what is pejoratively known (esp in UK law) as a super injunction. @OpenSecretsZA reports it has been gagged 1/
@OpenSecretsZA says it has been gagged and cannot reveal who the applicant is, what the case is about, and even which court it has been heard in :

We will be seeking to intervene in the case for @amaBhungane & @MoxiiAfrica 2/

1/ 3 Ahead of #worldnewsday I wrote on recent trend of prior restraints in South Africa, how these own goals evidence the Streisand effect or, more appropriately in SA, The Spear effect - “Stents, Sex tapes and escapees - Prior restraints and the Streisand effect” @dailymaverick

Its been a bit of a fight to get the story i have been working on, to air. On Friday the @carteblanche tv legal team @Dariomilo won the interdict that tried to stop broadcast. A testament to the courage of those who told us their stories - don’t miss it
It’s always a pleasure working with @carteblanchetv and @ohbejoyfull - and here, it’s a story that had to be told. This trend of people seeking pre-publication interests against media is worrying. Great team work @journojohn , WW team (Kuhle, Neo, Mufaro) & counsel

When a court bars a journalist from asking questions, it’s not just the press that’s silenced — it’s the public’s right to know. This is the story of ARTsolar, a gag order, and why amaBhungane stepped in to defend press freedom.
@amaBhungane It was a privilege to represent @amaBhungane in their intervention and as Caroline says, a pity no judgement but a great result. It’s incredible given the jurisprudence (incl @amaBhungane ex parte case brought by Mazetti Management) that there are still attempts to gag media.
A very good start to the week for @carteblanchetv@MNet on Monday and not so much for the medical professionals it has investigated.
On Monday morning, the BCCSA found in favour of @carteblanchetv in a complaint brought by Dr Soraya Patel 1/
