Service means standing firm on the American principle that all people are created equal.
Service means demanding equality of opportunity for all of our children.
Service means setting an example.
A degree from an HBCU means lifelong pride and lifelong responsibility. With all that this university has given you, we need you to give something back—in whatever way you choose.
I grew up in Georgia during Jim Crow. Our public high school had long been all-white. My sister and I were among the first Black students to integrate it. Those were pretty ugly days. I'm still grateful to the people of goodwill who made sure we could get a good public education.
As you graduate today, I know you'll be worried about what's next. That's normal.
Think about serving others. You'll feel deep and lasting pride.
Make that degree mean more than the words on the parchment. Match those words of promise with deeds of service.
We are so honored to present our 2023 commencement speaker The Secretary of Defense, The Honorable Lloyd J. Austin lII with the Crystal Bronco.
This Crystal Bronco is only given to a few select Fayetteville State University guests and it’s a pleasure to be able to have this moment with Secretary Austin.

Service is volunteering in your community.
It’s making sure every citizen gets a fair shot at the American dream. It’s doing your part to make real our country’s highest ideals of liberty and justice for all.
“Our democracy needs you. Each and every one of you. I hope you will always remember your duty to help those less fortunate. A degree from an HBCU means lifelong pride and responsibility and we need for you to give something back - to become doctors and nurses to heal the sick. Lawyers that fight for change. Teachers to pass on the gift of education. And yes, some of you to salute and defend the US by hoping the greatest fight force of the world.”
- The Secretary of Defense, The Honorable Lloyd J. Austin lII

“You made it! You are your ancestors wildest dreams. You deserve all the life has for you. Please know that Fayetteville State University, is so very proud of you.” - Chancellor Darrell T. Allison, J.D.
It’s never too late to graduate!
We honor our graduates that strive to achieve excellence no matter the circumstance. Working in childcare for over 25 years, Ms. Artis knew she could do more to help her community and today she received her bachelor’s degree in social work.
We celebrate Ms. Norma Artis today! You are a leading example of service.
Go Broncos!
