Final day at the @ICT4DConference
One of the biggest conversations focused on the ethics of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) and a powerful reminder emerged: technology is not neutral.
Many digital systems are designed with assumptions about internet access, smartphones, digital literacy, national IDs, language, and even physical ability. But for many communities across Africa, these assumptions do not match reality.
The result? Systems meant to increase access can also increase exclusion.
The discussion highlighted the need for:
✔️ Inclusive design
✔️ Local ownership
✔️ Accessible technology
✔️ Community-centred development
✔️ Better representation in digital systems
The future of digital transformation will not be measured by how advanced systems become, but by how many people they genuinely include.

AI readiness in the social sector isn’t just about access to tools. It depends on digital public infrastructure, AI literacy, and data standards designed with communities - not just for them. #ICT4D2026

We’re back at #ICT4D2026 in Nairobi this week, sharing work across East Africa focused on climate adaptation, community health systems, & financial inclusion.
Join #DataKind on May 21:
1:30 PM EAT - Data standards & codesign
4 PM EAT - Climate, health & food resilience
Disaster management orgs are asking not whether #AI matters but how to make it useful in practice. Recent AI Skills Jam combined @OpenAI Academy’s #AI training approach with #DataKind’s #humanitarian data expertise to explore #responsibleAI implementation. https://t.co/DCs30yhJgI
Pregnant women in Kajiado County face rising climate-health risks - malaria, heat stress, flooding disruptions - but health officials lack integrated local data to respond before harm happens. We built Climate x Health Pulse to change that. https://t.co/3zWQPiFCNe
#ClimateHealth
What if climate forecasts, health system data, and community insights could all talk to each other?
That's what we built with Spectrum Africa, @jacarandakenya, and Kajiado County Government Ministry of Health.
Introducing Climate x Health Pulse.

@gatesfoundation@envylabs AI-ready systems depend on strong, shared standards.
Standards = power (& a channel for coordination)
Codesign = legitimacy & adoption
Stewardship = long-term success
What role can each of us play in shaping not just using #digitalpublicinfrastructure? 👉https://t.co/PyamOzhLbL
Live @ #GoodTechSummit! DataKind convenes:
Infrastructure Isn’t Neutral: Why Codesign Matters for Data Standards. Building on a decade+ of experience working w/ communities & partners, we're exploring who shapes #datainfrastructure & how #AI can support shared standards adoption.
@gatesfoundation Panel in full swing: Nick Walsh (@envylabs) talking:
▪️Codesign vs efficiency
▪️Open standards as enablers (not blockers)
▪️AI + persistent context
