“Without trade unions and the workers willing to back them with strike action when needed we wouldn’t have a minimum wage, maternity and paternity rights, pension provision, holiday and sickness entitlements - victories which have benefited every single person in this country”
CWU RESPONSE TO NATIONAL FAR RIGHT RIOTS
As you will know, the past few days has seen acts of violence against Muslim and ethnic minority communities across the country.
The union has now been made aware that at least 40 demonstrations have been planned by far-right groups against mosques and refugee centres this Wednesday (7th August), with more being organised for the coming weekend.
Many of these acts are being committed in the name of the three children horrifically murdered in Southport. To be clear, these violent riots have nothing to do with people in Southport, who are appealing for calm, and the attack there was not committed by a Muslim. The CWU stands in absolute solidarity with the families and community of Southport and our local branches and region have been showing their support to the community in every way possible.
It is the job of trade unionists to deliver for workers and act as pillars of the community in bringing people together. The aims of our union and the labour movement are compromised and weakened if the agenda of race war beats the fight for working-class unity.
As such, we ask all branch committees to contact local mosques, refugee centres and solidarity groups in order to offer our union’s solidarity and support on the ground at a time when they face severe intimidation.
Finally, the need for the whole trade union movement to urgently develop and implement a new anti-racism strategy that reaches every single workplace and community in the UK is greater than ever. The CWU will be taking a lead on this and reporting back to Branches in the coming days and weeks.
Southport locals, who had far right thugs rampage through their streets, trampling on their collective grief, come together to rebuild a damaged wall at the local Mosque.
The thugs go low.
The people of Southport go high.
Dear people of Clacton,
As you vote today, please don’t forget that Nigel Farage openly said he would privatise the NHS given the chance.
Do you really want to be paying hundreds and hundreds of pounds every month like they do in the US?
How are we going to have important conversations with so much fake news and division? How can we have these conversations when there are certain individuals stoking so much division? Jo Grady talks about these topics on CWU Live.
Ahead of news on the takeover bid in Royal Mail I have written this piece calling for a new ownership model that puts postal workers and customers first.
Please share.

The huge peaceful protests over Gaza are not a threat to our democracy. They're a key part of it.
Their call for a Ceasefire Now is backed by 71% of the public.
Rishi Sunak's desperate attacks on the protests are simply because his Government knows it has lost the argument.
Journalists from The Sun newspaper will not be present for Bolton's Emirates FA Cup third-round replay with Luton Town after the publication had its media privileges suspended.
The decision was taken following a headline in Sunday's print newspaper.

No surprises here – just your typical disgusting, distasteful, and disrespectful style of so-called journalism we can come to expect from this lot.

The Horizon scandal — being dramatised in ITV's Mr Bates vs The Post Office — is one of the greatest miscarriages of justice in British legal history, and provides a stark warning about involving the private sector in our vital public institutions. https://t.co/DEFGUgOciu

Junior doctors aren't holding the NHS to ransom. They're holding the NHS together.
Pay them what they deserve.

Hey @vincecable you’ve got some bloody front criticising the postal service after you were the one who privatised it.
Everything customers and businesses are feeling today is because of you and your Con-Dem colleagues.
Hang your head in shame.
This is how this country works.
Daily Mail headline on the left was exactly a year ago: hammering CWU members for striking. They were striking to defend the service.
Headline on the right: complaining about postal chaos this Christmas.
Defend your local postie. They need you.
