For years, many Australians like myself have been warning that shutting down reliable baseload generation before having a proven replacement would come at an unfathomable cost. We have allowed ideology to get ahead of engineering and now households and businesses are paying the price through higher costs and a less reliable energy system.

Australia’s competitive advantage has always been its abundant natural resources and affordable energy. If we want stronger productivity, higher living standards and a more competitive economy, we need an energy policy built on reliability, affordability and security. Energy security is national security. Without cheap, abundant and dependable power, every sector of the economy becomes less productive and less competitive.
