🌍 How can Wales promote the Welsh language without unintended consequences like inequality and social division? @DaveJSayers proposes a "Doughnut Language Policy" to balance linguistic vitality with broader social wellbeing. 🧵👇https://t.co/2z1YAFaJfE
I have worked in Marketing for a long time & I just want to say the new Morrisons TV advert, the sung tag line 'more reasons to shop at Morrisons' DOESN'T FIT THE MELODY. I've been at home all week and it is driving me bananas
How did that get approved?!

@hmking_linguist@PhDVoice@AcademicChatter Before the viva RESIST temptation to start writing new stuff based on the thesis, or otherwise make corrections. It blurs your memory of what you actually wrote / are defending.
Also, balance accepting criticisms w/ reasserting your own authority (cos you are now an authority!).
In English studies, 'Inner Circle' countries = English is mostly a 1st language (e.g. US, Aus); 'Outer Circle' = mostly 2nd lang (e.g. India, Ghana).
I try to tell my students 'Inner Circle' happened by displacing/destroying whole populations. This passage helps that comparison.
Here's an incredibly important segment from one of Mushtaq Khan's papers explicitly critiquing AJR.
This is pretty dark reading, covering not only methodological flaws but also racism and the violent process of settler colonialism.

Writing a real out of office email would be:
“I will be out of the office until Monday, November 29, but I will be constantly checking email on my phone and additionally will have my work computer nearby”
NEWSFLASH: It's ok to do research with normative goals, actually. Everyone who says otherwise is supporting status quo power imbalances and inequality, which is, drum-roll, also a normative position, just a terrible one. 🤷♀️

Top tip if former students/employees often ask you for references: ask them to draft it & send you for checking/signing. It's entirely honest, you can verify details. Still it saves you a lot of time, & allows them to emphasise specific details for each job/study place. Win win!
Also true for language. Every single generation has decried the sloppy slang of youth, imagining some prior linguistic purity before everything went awry.
There's a certain kind of mindset, which we'll call "declinism," that asserts things are always getting worse. Remarkably, declinists always point to some period in history they believe was the ideal, but was, in fact, a period of decline for some other declinist.
Being "able bodied" is temporary, you will age, you will get injured, you will get sick and you will wish you fought more for the system to protect the vulnerable.
