WHISTLEBLOWER VS FIFA CORRUPTION
Bonita Mersiades worked on Australia's team trying to win the right to host the 2022 World Cup. She left that job in 2010. Then she did something braver than her old job ever asked of her. She told the truth.
FIFA hired an American lawyer called Michael Garcia to investigate corruption in how countries won the right to host the World Cup.
Bonita Mersiades gave him evidence. She said FIFA officials were asking bid teams for personal favours and money in exchange for votes.
She said Australia paid up too. She only agreed to talk because FIFA promised to keep her identity secret.
Here is how FIFA kept that promise.
In 2014 a judge called Hans-Joachim Eckert wrote a summary of Garcia's findings for the public. It described her in enough detail that everyone figured out who she was within days.
The summary also cast doubt on whether she could be trusted. So the reward for helping FIFA investigate itself was getting exposed and then called unreliable in the same document.
Mersiades and another whistleblower who worked on Qatar's bid complained. They said FIFA broke its promise of confidentiality.
FIFA looked into its own conduct and decided there was nothing wrong. Their excuse was that the summary never used her actual name. Just enough detail that everyone knew anyway.
Even Garcia, the man FIFA hired to do the investigating, was angry about how his work got rewritten. He quit his job at FIFA and tried to appeal the summary.
FIFA then sat on his full report for 3 more years. It only came out in 2017 after a German newspaper got hold of a leaked copy and published it first.
Once people finally read the whole thing, it backed up everything Mersiades had been saying since 2010.
Fast forward to 2026. The World Cup just finished in North America. FIFA's current president Gianni Infantino spent the tournament getting friendly with Donald Trump.
A watchdog group called FairSquare has now filed a formal complaint about it.
And guess who is helping lead that campaign. Bonita Mersiades again. 16 years after she first spoke up, she is still saying the same thing. Nothing has really changed.

You gonna meet them at the airport to offer your support, @Nigel_Farage?
How about you @TiceRichard?
We know you are both fans.
The Economist: You have close to 250 million followers on X. You say things like "civil war in Britain is inevitable. Just a question of when"
Elon Musk: On the current trend, yes.
The Economist: When were you last in the UK?
Musk: A few years ago
The Economist: Exactly. I live there. That is nonsense. The numbers also disprove what you say. London is a much safer city than any city in the US. You have painted Europe and the UK as overrun with terrifying Muslim immigrants, there's rape on every corner, there's civilizational destruction.
Musk: I didn't say any of those things.
Robert, spare us the pantomime.
Gary Lineker did not drag the government to court so he could pay less tax.
HMRC tried to reclassify his freelance work as employment under IR35 and hit him with a £4.9 million bill he did not owe. He took them on, won the case, and proved they got it wrong. That is not tax dodging. That is making the taxman stick to the rules instead of inventing them.
Defending yourself against a false bill is completely different from choosing to support higher taxes. One is your right. The other is putting your money where your mouth is.
You, on the other hand, are busy sneering at millionaires willing to pay more while the Met Police are investigating a £37,500 donation to your own Tory leadership campaign. The Electoral Commission referred it because part of the money allegedly came from a foreign source. You say the claims are false. Fine. The investigation is still running.
So whose side are you really on? Not the ordinary voter in your constituency watching services get cut.
Not the people who actually need the system to work.
You talk tough about tax while your own campaign finances are under scrutiny, and you still found time to abandon the Tories for Reform after failing to lead them.
You lecture others on hypocrisy while the police check your receipts. That takes a special kind of nerve.
Unfortunately our opponents have had to pull out of our friendly tomorrow evening. Any teams looking, we have pitch and officials ready to go. @AvonmouthFC@swsportsnews@FRIENDLYGAMEUK
Before #FIFA start pumping the propaganda tonight and telling us all how amazing this #WorldCup has been, let’s remember they oversaw:
- highest ticket prices ever and took a cut from resale sites.
- did nothing about Somalian referee and dozens of staff who were banned from entering the US for no legitimate reason.
- stood by as Iran were forced to train outside the US and travel in on match days.
- overturned red cards after phone calls with the president.
- Americanised the beautiful game with hydration (TV) breaks and 25 mins half time in the final
- guided Argentina through the tournament with less travel, VAR support and blatantly turning a blind due to their aggression and foul play.
It’s twenty weeks since President Trump and Israel’s PM Netanyahu staged their joint attack on 28 February, in the hope of wiping out Iran’s leadership. By my count Mr Trump has claimed victory around 34 times since then. And yet the war still goes on….
This is the best news to wake up to.
Andrew and Tristan Tate have been arrested in US on British extradition request. They face 59 charges of rape, trafficking for sexual exploitation, assault and offences relating to indecent images of a child and extreme pornography.
England's Bukayo Saka, Marc Guehi, Trevoh Chalobah and Eberechi Eze joined France's Dayot Upamecano, Maxence Lacroix and Jean-Philippe Mateta in prayer after the final whistle in a powerful show of unity and respect 🙏❤️
😳 BOMBSHELL claims from Nigel Farage on Triggernometry: He claims Elon Musk offered “very large sums of money” to Reform UK but only if Farage publicly backed @TRobinsonNewEra and started pushing mass deportations of illegals before the party had a concrete plan.
Farage says he refused, telling Konstantin: “He wanted me to come out publicly and support Tommy Robinson, and I said I can’t do that. He wanted me to come out and talk about deportations of illegals before we had a plan.”
Framing it as proof no one can “buy” him (in response to questions about other donors), Farage positioned it as standing up to Musk’s demands and not being “bullied”.
This is basically accusing Musk of trying to blackmail him with cash for political concessions. Serious accusations. It will be interesting to hear Musk’s response. 🤔
