Independent Waverley Borough Councillor for Western Commons ward. Lives in Frensham, S of Farnham. Chair of Why Me?, the national restorative justice charity.
Went to see firefighters on Thursley Road near the fire that broke out yesterday at the Southern end of Hankley Common. They told me the fire was under control and dying down but they would be keeping a careful watch on the site for some time yet. Thank you @SurreyFRS
Thank you to the staff, trustees, volunteers, ambassadors, and other friends of Why me? who joined our festive celebration yesterday evening! And a massive thank you to @theCOOKkitchen for generously sponsoring our event with delicious desserts.
Is violence normal? What is the role of Restorative Justice in reducing violence? How are shame and violence connected?
Great questions from @JacobFreeeman & Why me? Chair @DavidJMunro in the first of this year’s Reith Lectures.

Last week we premiered all 10 films @WarnerBrosUK. A panel chaired by @mcneil_tom with @whymeUK's Will Gilluley, filmmaker Nick Alexander, Jemma En Rose @RIFT_social_ent & @DannyShawNews explored how storytelling and media shape public understanding and policy change.
Good to be at a Surrey Hills National Landscapes symposium, where the new branding for Surrey Hills was unveiled - looks good. My particular interest is how to stop byways open to all traffic (BOATs) being damaged by badly-driven 4x4s and bikes.
The prison population has risen by 93% in the past 30 years & England and Wales has one of the highest imprisonment rates in western Europe.
The sentencing review is an opportunity for a much-needed reset.

Went along to Liphook today for the consultation event for extending the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty extension to South of Dockenfield in Hampshire. I wholeheartedly agree the AONB should be extended and hope it goes through - it will take some time though.
Good news - the van blocking Green Lane Churt has now been removed. It’s taken longer than wished as there is a legal process to go through, but thanks to everyone who lobbied effectively to get it done.

After his son was attacked, Rob took part in a restorative process with one of the attackers. “It felt like a weight had been lifted from me that I didn’t even realise I was carrying."

A great privilege to meet Lord Timpson, the Prisons’ Minister, at the inaugural 2024 Reith Lecture - in my hat as Chair of Why Me? the charity that campaigns for more Restorative Justice.
Why me? Chair of Trustees @DavidJMunro had a great evening attending the @BBCRadio4 Reith Lectures alongside Prisons Minister @JamesTCobbler!
Dr Gwen Adshead considered the motivations and rehabilitation of those who commit violent acts – including through Restorative Justice.
@DavidJMunro Dear Cllr Munro - thank you for your comments; the motion passed by @WaverleyBC made it clear the Council supports means testing for the Allowance in principle, but has no confidence it could be done before this winter - as you will know, govt has undertaken no impact assessment.
Congratulations Julian. I know you’re a centrist Conservative so hope you will be able to rein in some of your more extreme colleagues - such as some of those vying for the party leadership.
I’m humbled to have been elected as Chairman of the @conservatives National Convention. Thank you to all who supported me, and to those who put themselves forward for election for all of the roles. Time to get to work! 💙
As an independent councillor at Waverley I agree with this response below but would also have liked to see my Council acknowledge that the Winter Fuel Allowance needs reforming so that only people who really need it get it - not all pensioners, rich and poor alike.
Our CEO, Sara Dowling, attended this @MoJGovUK meeting with @AlexDaviesJones and other organisations supporting victims and witnesses in the justice system. Sara says the following:
Useful meeting at @WaverleyBC last night, scrutinising the emerging council strategic plan for the next three years - an important document. My main point was that we mustn’t just concentrate on building affordable housing, important though that is, but also move-on properties
Why me? CEO Sara Dowling was delighted to meet with patron Mel Giedroyc today to discuss exciting plans ahead. We are so grateful for Mel's support and look forward to working together!
Good webinar about new project to improve heathlands in West Surrey. I proposed that controls on noisy bikes & 4x4s in sensitive areas should be strengthened - to the benefit of wildlife, residents & more respectful visitors. Didn’t get a firm answer, but will keep on the case.
Volunteering at Alice Holt Forest on a blisteringly hot day running our usual Thursday morning session helping people with disabilities of various kinds to ride specially-designed bikes. Alice Holt Inclusive Cycling (AHIC) is a great charity bringing joy & freedom to so many.
