Forget any of the fuss you may have heard about the Castle Course at @TheHomeofGolf. If the 7th and most recent of the St. Andrews Links courses is one you decide to skip, you’ll be missing out on something special.

Set on a coastal bluff two miles southeast from and overlooking the town of St. Andrews, the 2008 design from Scotsman @DavidMcLayKidd makes things interesting right away, with strategy and risk baked into an eclectic scorecard that has five par threes, back-to-back par fives at 4 & 5, and an enormous double green shared by the closing holes of each side perched on a headland near the site of Kinkell Castle in the Middle Ages.

“I hope the course is kind to you, she can be a beast!” said Kidd in a text before the round. A fine day it was for 13 holes, until a June hail storm briskly blew in and forced us out, left to dream about a notably strong string of finishing holes.

It’s hard to fathom that @Sand_Valley opened for play less than a decade ago. It feels as though the resort has been around for much longer, largely because the central Wisconsin property made its debut with such fanfare in 2017, delivering a superb @coorecrenshaw routing that meandered through exposed dunes, followed the next year by a @DavidMcLayKidd creation with fairways and greens that embraced its Mammoth Dunes moniker. It has since added a captivating Tom Doak design called Sedge Valley, and had Doak rebuild The Lido, a C.B. Macdonald creation, circa 1917, that originally played along the southern shores of Long Island and will host the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship this fall.

Yet another course will open this summer, the Commons, a 3,475-yard 12-holer designed by Jim Craig. Drawing inspiration from classic Scottish links—North Berwick, in particular—the Commons taps into the site’s wild and rumpled terrain and is certain to thrill players with a slew of holes that offer numerous pathways to success, plus plenty of undulations to traverse. Additionally, a 20-acre driving range and practice facility is scheduled to open later this year, with four new paddle tennis courts to follow.

Back in July, 2025, @firepitstories was brought in by @KemperSports to document the building of the fifth course at @streamsong, a David McLay Kidd design. Can’t say enough about Kidd and his crew. Their courses are “fun,” and the fact that they have so much fun building them definitely factors into the finished product. We appreciate the opportunity and all of hospitality we received from the resort and staff as we chased sunrises and sets and everything in between.
