Now on education side, nkiwa primary our class tulikua only 28,high-school 34 & KCSE tulikuwa combined na certain school walikua only 5 candidates. Alarming

This is my story :
I started coding when I was 15 years old . An opportunity to participate in technovation girls presented itself and a university in my country had suffered a terrorist attack that left 148 students dead a few months earlier . There and then I decided to build an app that would prevent such a catastrophe by preventing surprise and notifying a user when there is a threat .

I spent time at the school library , reading about sensors , detectors and how I could bring all that into the phone . And with the help of a mentor , the mvp was ready but without a hardware . Three months later , result were out and I was not selected to go and present my solution in Silicon valley.

I did not give up on the idea. In fact , it drove me to keep learning code and got me a bootcamp scholarship to learn Android development, python and web in 2019. After the bootcamp , I joined University to study telecommunications and IT . Due to my software development experience , I landed a full-time roll with Liquid Group , a multinational telecommunications company headquartered in the UK. There , I worked with the R&D team , building frontend for networks systems such as BGP network monitoring system and firewalls .

In 2022 , at the school's innovation week , I presented the idea of weapon detection using a phone again . This time I rebuilt the app and had AI classification models involved . The prototype worked , and I got awarded for the innovation . My school promised to help me build it , but they got committed with other things . I shelved the idea again.

Liquid suffered a massive lay off mid 2024 , and our department was declared redundant . Then I started @gero_chula , connecting schools in Rusinga Island to the internet .

Mid 2025 , I joined an AI startup to build products for their LLM . And that was the turning point for me . In the process of researching about AI engineering , I got inspired to create my own architectures that could run in resource-constraint environments . Partly because I could not afford compute for a billion parameter model - so I made models that were <0.1MB fp32 , could run and train in CPU and without compromising on accuracy and performance . My physics and telecommunications background came in handy - because the lightweight models are physics inspired .

And that is how @spairally's engine was made . Very tiny on-device models with faster inference , less compute and does just the right task needed to make Spairally work . Tested the models in controlled environments , then in a live shooting range and the results were great . I built a product around it . Created a company , and shipped .

Three months since our MVP went public and we have paying users from 8 countries , 4 continents . Getting into @speedrun means a lot to us . To our vision of a safer world and to our growth and development as a startup .

The urgent need for @spairally : We are solving a critical public safety challenge . The problem existed 10 years ago , the problem still exists now . In our schools , public spaces , in our communities . This is our why .

At exactly 6am on 20th August 2019, four people entered a brand new studio and started a journey along an uncharted path.

When I switched on the four microphones that morning I was excited at launching yet another station, but I also had butterflies in my stomach; would this work? Would the audience embrace four hours of non-stop talk during their busy morning commute? 

The four of us with CT Muga, Ndu Okoh and Njeri Thorne took on the new assignment with dedication and a true belief that we could do it. Outside of that studio was our producer Brian Evusa, the Programmes Controller Brian Obara and, although he wasn’t in the studio, the Radio General Manager Tom Japanni was present.

It has been a great journey building The Situation Room to what it has become and we have very many people to thank, not least the team of producers, marketing, commercial, technical and other colleagues.

The Situation Room has become the home of Kenya’s Biggest Conversations and it continues to host many thought leaders, community influencers, different professionals and duty bearers. 

The biggest part of this show has been the audience who tune in on radio, Tv or digital platforms. It’s humbling whenever people reach out on calls, text or approach us with compliments, comments and suggestions for the show. 

On this 6th day of January 2025, my heart is heavy as I bid kwaheri to the brilliant team of colleagues at Spice FM and the Standard Group. I am grateful for the opportunity to once again be a part of Kenya’s oldest private media house and I am proud of the teams that I leave behind in radio, TV and print.

I love the thrill of creating and starting new things and I have been blessed to do just that. I was privileged to be there at the launch of Kenya’s first 24hr religious media house - Family FM and Family TV, the first 24hrs vernacular radio station - Kameme FM and the first 24hr news and information TV station - K24.

Is there room for something new? Of course, always, and I sure hope to be a part of it soon. Wish me luck, I will keep you posted.
