I recall that sometime last month, while studying for my exams, I took a picture of a question and sent it to an AI, but it kept giving me the wrong solution. I tried it twice, but still the same gibberish. Funnily, it was a simple calculation that I could easily use my calculator for, but that day, I decided to test the AI, and it didn’t fail to disappoint me.

But it got me thinking…

What if it was something more serious, like something about someone’s life or a company’s finances? It could’ve been disastrous.

AI systems do hallucinate, and if you’re ignorant or just hearing about the subject for the first time, it could land you in serious trouble. When an AI system hallucinates, it means that it gives an answer that sounds correct but is wrong.

Looking at it from the scope of our day-to-day life, this issue might seem trivial, but what if it were a medical AI that diagnoses a patient wrongly, a legal AI that fails to give the right advice, or even a trading AI that makes wrong decisions? It would be a different story.

What about the issue of transparency? Most AI systems don’t tell us how they come up with their answers, leaving people in the dark about whether they can be trusted or not. Many AI systems are also controlled by a single company, which can lead to bias and limit how much we can trust their outputs.
