I don’t care that he used to be in a pop band. I care that his experience since leaving it appears to be Oxford, a left-leaning think tank, the Treasury and then straight into advising Andy Burn’em (was he a fan boy?)

This man has never built a business, created jobs, juggled cash, put his house on the line or ever sat on the board of a company.

How can he give ‘advice’ if he has no experience? An Oxford degree and a record deal do not qualify you to advise on an economy.

Hancock Prospecting wrote to the ABC board on 23 July asking it to remove the film describing Gina Rinehart being sodomised and killed, apologise publicly, and investigate how it was approved.

A week passed. Hancock says it got no substantive response and the film stayed up. It has now placed ABC chair Kim Williams, deputy chair Lisa Caffery and managing director Hugh Marks on notice of detailed allegations of serious breaches of Australian law. No proceedings have been filed.

The ABC says it will respond in due course. The film is still online.

THE UNIONS GAVE LABOR $142 MILLION. THAT’S THE SMALL NUMBER.

Twenty-seven years of AEC receipts. I pulled every line where a union gave money to the Labor Party.

$142,236,905.

That’s after de-duplication. The raw figure is $156 million, but the same payment can appear on both a divisional return and a branch return, so I stripped the doubles. Eight point eight per cent came out. The number that stands is $142 million.

Now the same query, the other way. Union money to the Liberals, the Nationals and the LNP across the same twenty-seven years:
$82,284.

Not million. Eighty-two thousand dollars. Point zero five per cent. Union political money in this country goes to one place.

So far, what you expected. Here’s what you didn’t.

Over the same period, non-union money to the Labor Party, companies, individuals, associated entities, everything that isn’t a union, comes to $1,199,485,934.

One point two billion dollars.

Unions are eleven and a half per cent of what Labor discloses receiving. Corporate and private money is nearly eight times larger. And the Coalition took $1,394,046,222 from non-union sources over the same years.

The fair reading, and it matters. Unions are affiliated to the Labor Party under its own rules. This isn’t hidden money, it’s structural, declared, and it comes with votes at conference that no corporate donor gets. That’s a real distinction, and it cuts in Labor’s favour on transparency and against it on influence.

But anyone who tells you the unions own the Labor Party is arguing with the Electoral Commission’s own file. The unions gave $142 million. Everybody else gave $1.2 billion.

The question nobody asks is who everybody else is.
