Dred Scott v. Sandford (1857) was a Supreme Court ruling. Enslaved man Dred Scott sued for freedom after living in free territories. The Court held that African Americans were not U.S. citizens, could not sue in federal court, and that Congress lacked power to ban slavery in the territories. It effectively limited citizenship to whites and was later overturned by the 13th and 14th Amendments.
