Keep your problems smaller than your life. A flat tire is a flat tire. A bad meeting is a bad meeting. A canceled flight is just an extra two hours. These things become catastrophes when you let them. But they stay manageable when you remember the depth of your real life- the people you love, the work you care about, the beautiful years still ahead. Zoom out. Fit your reaction to the size of the problem.
I recently saw the case of the Uber driver who killed another motorist in a road rage. And it reminded me of this time we were riding in a bus from Ngong to CBD, and a bus conductor was being rude to my buddy (an operator).
I asked my buddy why he wasn't putting the dude in his place. He had a reason & the authority. Buddy told me that soon as he alights, the conductor will be the least of his problems. Like he was before we boarded that bus.
Said he could carry the conductor and his foulness home by escalating the situation, or leave him right where he found him: who had more to lose?
Problems are just problems, and they will never end. Our reaction, that's what decides how much that problem will weigh us down and for how long.
It's going to be terrible for that dude in that road rage incident. His life has taken a detour he might never escape. Both mentally and physically.
After you get married, you’re going to meet ‘better’ people than your spouse. You’re going to meet more good-looking people; kinder and more romantic people; more intelligent and funny people.
You will meet people who have in abundance what your partner lacks. The mushy and romanticized idea that your partner will be everything to you, and will satisfy all your needs and wants is idolatry. Contentment in marriage is a virtue not often spoken about.
You must wake up every day appreciating everything your partner is to you, everything they have, their beauty and the things that made you marry them because if you focus on everything they don’t do well, you’ll always meet better people.
Protect your heart! See their best part, and always remember that your commitment to marry is more of a duty than it is of mushy feelings. You have to stay committed even on the days you feel your spouse is no longer the best fit for you.
CRY, FOR OUR AFRICA!
If you look at many African countries on the day before independence & after, you will wonder what went wrong!
Ghana & Zimbabwe were highly developed with excellent education & transport infrastructure. And world class agriculture & mining. After independence, both have been downhill since.
Others like DR Congo, Liberia, both Sudans, Sierra Leone, both Guineas, Gabon et al have the most abundant natural resources in the world but what can they show us? Civil strife & abundant poverty. Only their leaders live in opulence with homes abroad. Some are Belgian citizens!
Nigeria with abundant oil & 300m people can’t even have running power or water supply. With so much arable land & many rivers, Nigeria imports tomatoes from Italy! Years ago, Thailand took palm oil trees seedlings from Nigeria. Thailand is now the world biggest palm oil producer. Nigeria once produced 40% of world palm oil; now zero!
South Africa, Namibia & Botswana have maintained their economies even after independence. South Africa is still Africa’s biggest & most advanced economy.
Ethiopia & Burkina Faso are the only countries where charismatic leaders forever transformed them in less than four years. Thomas Sankara in Burkina Faso & Meles Zenawi. With no natural resources, Ethiopia is poised to be in top 20 world economies by 2040!
Africa has refused to develop because after independence, we started revolving thieving leaders. Sankara & Zenawi died without having stolen One Dollar from their countries. And so was Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore. Transformative leadership is founded on moral character with no stain.
Africa has a long way to go!
I haven't stopped thinking about a brilliant little girl named Faith that I met outside the Malawian consulate in Joburg.
She was born in South Africa but her whole family is undocumented. Her dad - a gardener - said they were kicked out of their house and he lost his job
My dear friends and colleagues. 16 girls in Utimishi Academy were fatally set ablaze by their fellow students!!
Bad adults are not an accident. They are a project. A project that started at age 5 when a child talked back to an adult and the parent laughed and said, "Huyu mtoto ni tough kama mimi"
A project that continued at age 10 when the child threw a tantrum in public and nobody said a word.
A project that matured at age 15 when the teenager disrespected a teacher and the parent showed up at school to defend the child.
A project that graduated at age 25 when a fully grown adult cannot keep a job because they cannot take correction from anyone.
Nobody wakes up at 30 and suddenly becomes rude, entitled, dishonest, and impossible to deal with.
That software was installed early.
By parents who were allergic to the word "no."
"Mtoto wangu asiumizwe."
"Usimshoutie."
"Let the child express themselves."
Express themselves into what, exactly?
A menace?
Because that is what happened.
You let your child talk back to elders and called it confidence.
You let them break rules and called it creativity.
You let them disrespect boundaries and called it independence.
Now they are 28.
They cannot hold a relationship because they have never been told they are wrong.
They cannot keep a job because they argue with every supervisor. They cannot take feedback without crying victim.
And you are wondering what happened.
You happened.
You skipped the most important part of parenting.
Discipline.
Not beating. Discipline.
Teaching a child that actions have consequences. That "no" is a complete sentence. That apologizing is not weakness. That respecting people is not optional.
These are lessons that must be taught early. Because the world will not teach them gently.
Schools do not raise children. The internet does not raise children. TikTok does not raise children. Church does not raise children.
Parents do.
And if you refuse to correct your child, society will do it for you.
Society has no patience. No mercy. No second chances.
Prisons are full of people who were never told "sit down" at age 7.
Broken homes are full of adults who were never taught emotional regulation at age 12.
Unemployment lines are full of people who were never told "do it again properly" at age 15.
You had the chance to shape them.
You chose comfort over correction.
And now the world is dealing with the result.
Raise children with manners. With respect. With accountability. With the understanding that the world owes them nothing and character determines everything.
Otherwise, you are not raising a child.
You are manufacturing a future problem.
And society will send you the bill.
My daughter knows I love her deeply, but I don't hesitate to discipline her when she crosses the line. Last night, after a serious talk-down, I sent her upstairs to her room.
Tell me why this little girl woke up this morning and one of the first things she asked was, “Dad, why didn't you come upstairs to pray and kiss me last night?”
We spent almost ten minutes talking about what happened the previous night, and the girl calmly told me she was wrong, but that I was wrong for not coming upstairs to pray and kiss her.
Once again, I got reminded that we shouldn't be so angry with the people we love that we stop showing them love and care.
