Interesting weather! After record-breaking mornings heat an active medium level thunderstorm now overhead Fair Isle tracking north. Loud rumbles of thunder every minute or so. Initially 9800ft cloud base fell to 5600ft in moderate precipitation.
Fair Isle weather observations commenced 1974. Only twice has 20°C been reached: 20.2° August 1975 and 20.1° July 1991. Today at 1017 UTC with no wind & medium level cloud cover 22.6° was recorded. Luckily the earlier 87% RH had fallen back to 75%.
Fair Isle - nothing too fierce, max wind midday-early afternoon around 290 40kn gust 65kn. Large 3 hourly pressure rise though with 11.3 hPa at 1200h and 11.0 hPa at 1300h.
Scotland's sole-surviving patch from last winter was seen yesterday by Douglas Cairns as he took his light aircraft for a service. The snow visible here fell in late 2019 and is in the region of 20 metres long.
Turbulence precluded a closer look at the patch.
On #Saturday night increased geomagnetic activity means #aurora sightings will be possible as far south as Norfolk 🔭✨
Here's a look at which areas may have clear skies tomorrow night and have a chance of spotting the #NorthernLights#spaceweather
Thickening and lowering altostratus and alto cumulus cloud at sunrise with a freshening S’ly breeze, heralding the approach of a warm front off the Atlantic. Fair Isle, Shetland.
Aurora is likely to occur over much of Scotland and perhaps extend into northern England and Northern Ireland tonight
For many in these areas it will be too cloudy but there are some spots in with a chance 👇
Send us your #aurora pics using #LoveUKWeather ✨🔭
@metoffice An acceptable cool 12°C at Fair Isle, Shetland today. Rather than the persistent overcast would have appreciated a few hours sunshine to add a couple of degrees! 20.1°C our highest ever max (records back to 1974).
A fine, cool spring morning. Small cumulonimbus downwind of Fair Isle and early inbound Islander flight. Light NE breeze, temp 6.5 with dew point 2.5 Celsius. Freezing level around 2500-3000ft amsl. @ Fair Isle Airport https://t.co/DMQTQJu3sj

It’s not often #Shetland and #Jersey, islands at the northern and southern extremities of the British Isles - a little over 1200km apart - have similar weather/forecasts of freezing temperatures and snow! Photo #fairisle#Shetland
@extremetemps @52tartanrose @TheSnowDreamer@barklandcroft Thanks for the confirmation Fair Isle is unique! Apart from short winter days it’s only like now, with an outbreak of Arctic air, we are reminded of our northerly latitude. A small island with an oceanic climate, usually warmed by the North Atlantic Drift. #FairIsle#Shetland
