As a professor and a mom, I am passionate about schools and will work hard to ensure that every student in Dubuque has access to a quality education.š
āEven if a Democratic governor had proposed this bill, I would not be supporting it.ā
Senator @PJochum identifies what the government reorganization scheme is really about: giving the governor and her cronies more power and less accountability. #ialegis
We believe Iowa's students deserve to thrive without politicians getting in the way. That's why weāre urging Iowa lawmakers to oppose HF 8 (now renumbered as HF 348), the "Don't Say Gay/Trans" bill, which would further marginalize LGBTQ students and cause harm. #Iowa
Over the last decade, the Governor and #IAGOP have not adequately funded our public education system. Kids in every zip code in Iowa deserve a great education, and it is time for the legislature to renew its commitment to the stateās great public schools. #ialegis
Among all private schools in IA the share of white students in half of IA's private schools is at least 11 percentage points higher than the share of white students in the public school districts. #privateschools
A new bill from Gov. Reynolds removes the requirement that schools have a qualified teacher-librarian.
@MDonahueforIA is a teacher herself, and knows the value of trained teacher-librarians in our schools. Listen as she explains how lower standards hurts Iowa kids. #ialegis
Director of Education Ann Lebo has resigned. I guess she has lost confidence in her ability to watch our once excellent public education system go down the tubes under @IAGovernor Reynolds.
ā ļø 2/2/23 Ed Funding Updateā ļø: the IA Senate passed SF 192 -setting SSA at 3%. This bill could be debated in the House as soon as Monday.
Please contact your state representative about the importance of adequate education funding in your local district: https://t.co/H8dbg771hZ
.@SarahforIowa brought the receipts. The school funding plan Republicans forced through the Senate today will cut budgets for 71 Iowa school districts and threaten more rural schools with consolidation and closure. #ialegis
Iowa House bill that encourages reporting educators for teaching the truth advanced out of subcommittee yesterday. This legislation makes school districts pay up to $5,000 if action Republicans deem appropriate isnāt taken. And they wonder why Iowa has a teacher shortageā¦
Amendment by Senator @MDonahueforIA to add weighting for kids living in poverty and increase weighting for kids who need special education services. Iowa schools have been asking for poverty weighting for years, and there is a $144 million special ed deficit State wide.
Continually struck by how overjoyed @IAGovernor was to punch down on trans kids, some of her most vulnerable constituents.
Yet she claims to care about children's mental health.

THREAD: Iowa Safe Schools Statement on SF 83 & HF 9 Subcommittee Passage
Des Moines, IA (January 31, 2022) ā Today, SF 83 & HF 9, a bill which would ban gender identity instruction in grades K-8 and a bill which would āoutā transgender students passed subcommittees.
Today at 1:30 the Senate Education Committee is holding a subcommittee of the whole for school fundingā¦again, cutting the public out of the process and fast tracking attacks on public education. A 2% increase does not keep up with 7% increase in costsāan effective cut.
The āDonāt Say Transā bill that Senate Republicans pushed forward today tells LGBTQ kids they arenāt welcome in our schools.
Itās dangerous, itās wrong, and it goes against our Iowa values.
Senate Democrats are proud to support Iowa families ā ALL Iowa families.

Iowans want @IAHouseGOP to support educators, not charge a fine if they speak honestly in the classroom! But, thatās what was proposed in HSB112. Iām urging my Representatives to get out of the classroom! Will you join me?
