CNN reports that Saudi Arabia’s East-West oil pipeline system was struck by projectiles Thursday, with U.S. officials saying pumping stations alongside the pipeline were hit and fires broke out. Satellite imagery appears to show significant fire damage at one pumping station, although it remains unclear whether the pipeline itself was damaged or how long repairs would take.

One U.S. official told CNN the attack was carried out by drones originating from Iraq, but responsibility has not been independently established. The incident comes as Iran-aligned groups are simultaneously threatening Saudi energy infrastructure and Red Sea shipping.

The pipeline has become especially important since the Strait of Hormuz was effectively closed, allowing Saudi Arabia to move roughly 5 million barrels of oil per day from its eastern fields to the Red Sea port of Yanbu. At the same time, the Houthis have threatened Saudi shipping through Bab al-Mandab.

The attacks are putting pressure on both of Saudi Arabia's principal export routes as Riyadh seeks greater U.S. support against the Houthis. Reuters reports that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman asked Trump for direct U.S. military assistance Thursday, but Washington declined and instead offered intelligence and targeting support.

On the morning of 9/11, Mohammad Salman Hamdani was on his way to work when he diverted to the Twin Towers to help victims at what was clearly some kind of catastrophe given the billowing black smoke emanating from them.

He was an EMT and NYPD cadet, and it is believed he used his credentials to make his way through police lines in order to render aid and save lives.

During the weeks of rescue and recovery following that horrific day, his identification and his medical bag were found in the rubble of the North Tower. The remains also found in that spot would take five months to be identified as his through DNA testing.

He was 23.

His parents were Pakistani and Muslim immigrants and came to the U.S. when he was an infant. His mother was a middle school English teacher, and his father owned and operated a convenience store in Brooklyn.

Mr. Hamdani grew up in Queens. He attended Bayside High School, where he was on the football team. He graduated from Queens College in the summer of 2001 and knew he wanted to serve the public as a first responder.

He was given a police funeral with full honors the month after his remains were identified. Mayor Bloomberg and NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly were among the mourners and presented his parents and two younger brothers with a police shield.

He’s been honored in other ways. There are scholarships in his name at Queens College and Rockefeller University. There’s a street named after him in the Bayside neighborhood of Queens. He was cited for his heroism by Congress.

Mr. Hamdani was an American kid who grew up into a young man who wanted to serve his community, and he died trying to save the lives of others.

In September 2011, ahead of the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, President Barack Obama sent a personal letter to Prime Minister Stephen Harper thanking Canada and Canadians for their help during Operation Yellow Ribbon.

He wrote: “In one of the darkest moments of our history, Canada stood by our side and showed itself to be a true friend.” “We remember with gratitude and affection how the people of Canada offered us the comfort of friendship and extraordinary assistance that day and in the following days by opening their airports, homes and hearts to us.” “On this anniversary, we recognize all the gestures of friendship and solidarity shown to us by Canada and its people and give thanks for our continuing special relationship.”

Under Operation Yellow Ribbon, more than 33,000 passengers on 224 diverted flights were rerouted to 17 Canadian airports, including Vancouver, Gander, Halifax, Goose Bay, Whitehorse, Edmonton and Calgary.

I was proud to begin this day of remembrance alongside @FDNY Commissioner Bonsignore @FDNYFC by laying a wreath at the foot of the Firemen’s Memorial. For more than a century, this monument has honored the heroes who risk their lives to keep us safe.

During the horrific terror attacks on September 11, 2001, 343 members of the FDNY answered that call. They climbed the stairs of the World Trade Center knowing the danger ahead and never hesitated to put their lives on the line for their fellow New Yorkers.

Today, we remember their courage and honor their memory and the profound legacy they leave behind.
