A billion-kilometer chase has come to an end

China’s Tianwen-2 probe has caught up with its target. After a journey spanning four hundred days and roughly a billion kilometers, it approached the near-Earth asteroid Kamoʻoalewa (also known as 2016 HO3)—coming within about twenty kilometers—and began its scientific program. The China National Space Administration announced the news.

The spacecraft launched from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in Sichuan Province back in May 2025; its path was not a straight line but a long series of precise adjustments—deep-space trajectory corrections and maneuvers during transitional phases.

The reason for such caution is intriguing. From Earth, Kamoʻoalewa’s position could only be determined with an accuracy of about one hundred kilometers. That is sufficient for telescopic observation, but attempting to rendezvous with the object in the void of space would be disastrous.

The turning point came in early June, when Tianwen-2 first spotted the asteroid using its own instruments. A day later, from a distance of about thirty thousand kilometers, the probe executed a capture maneuver and shifted into a coplanar flight path—meaning it didn't just cross the asteroid's orbit but settled alongside it, matching the target's motion. By June 19, the distance had shrunk to two thousand kilometers, and it continued to close in further.

Throughout this time, the spacecraft imaged the asteroid with its own optics while engineers recalculated its position. The margin of uncertainty dropped from one hundred kilometers to roughly one—a hundredfold improvement. The refined data has already been made publicly available via China’s lunar and planetary data release system.

Now the main phase begins: studying the terrain, material composition, and what lies beneath the surface. The mission's ultimate goal is to collect a soil sample and return it to Earth.

And here is the intriguing part. Kamoʻoalewa is a quasi-satellite: it stays so close to Earth’s orbit that it effectively accompanies us on our journey around the Sun. Some scientists suspect it is a fragment of the Moon, dislodged by an ancient impact. If this hypothesis is correct, China will be bringing home not just a rock, but a lost piece of our own satellite.
