If you allowed in hope, that doesn't make you stupid. If you allowed in contradiction (voting K. while also wanting empire dismantled/free 🍉), that doesn't make you uncommitted. If you were conflicted, that doesn't make you indecisive. Hope, nuance, grief, they also belong.
Grief belongs. Anger belongs. Fear belongs. Reaching out to everything and everyone you love belongs. Visioning another world belongs. Slowness and cycling through many feelings both belong. Numbness, disbelief, and "I knew it" all belong. Gentleness belongs. Love belongs.
This is what I know: embrace your stories with your whole soul. Get them out in the world. Doesn’t matter how. Someone will be moved by them. Keep telling your stories.
Love this. "Hard Sell" stories I've sold:
_ Begins when MC wakes up from a dream (have at least 2 writing books that say you can't do that)
_ 2nd person POV (spoiler, I'm not Jay McInerney)
_ No "compelling" MC, no MC at all
_ No plot, just vibes.
TLDR: Trust your vision.
Let's talk hard sells. How many stories have you sold with so-called "forbidden" elements? I'll start:
-begins with MC waking up: 5
-begins with a paragraph describing setting: 5
-2nd person POV: 11
-present tense: 15
-"no plot"/vague POV: 18
What am I missing? 👻
Make art that seeks to tear down empire, confronts it with honesty and teeth. Don’t glamorize empire, don’t assist it, don’t make it your muse or you will be its mule.
WELCOME VIRGO SEASON. VERY MINDFUL. VERY CORRECT. VERY THOUGHTFUL. VERY CONSCIENTIOUS. VERY THOROUGH. VERY SPECIFIC. VERY WITCHY. VERY EXACTING. VERY HARDWORKING. VERY DETAILED. VERY AHEAD OF THE GAME. VERY DEMURE. VERY IMMEDIATE AND PERMANENT CEASEFIRE AND ARMS EMBARGO NOW.
So excited to see BOTH (!!!!) @cloudAnthro and @tiffmorris, both from @StelliformPress in this year's @fiyahlitmag' s Ignyte Award ballot! I LOVED both these books so much. You can go vote here! https://t.co/wXUekkO8oJ
Great he’s ok…while yet again, others around him died. But he acts like an idiot during a crisis (it’s fascinating how that moment of idiocy is being plastered everywhere right now). Not surprised about that but it should be noted.
This Story. THIS STORY. ICYMI, @bpladek's The Spindle of Necessity" in @strangehorizons devastates me over and over, so happy to see the shoutout in @MariaHaskins' roundup. Read it here and thank me later. https://t.co/AKvztwWGi7
LOVE this month's episode of @FacultyofHorror for some fantastic thinking on eco-horror and our relationship with "Nature." Also bears.
