I mean, it was the explicit law of the land until about 1964.

We can disagree on the policy yeah. But to claim it’s anti-American is to just ignore the first 75% of America’s history and lands us squarely into the debate currently raging. What is an American? We don’t appear to have consensus here.

Just becasue Hart-Cellar Act exists. And Ronald Regan said some nice things. Doesn’t change that many Americans have a certain, and yeah exclusionary, way they think about America. It’s their country too. This debate will rage on for some time.

America has likely been on the path to empire since the civil war for sure. Trying to decide the exact moment we crossed the line is interesting though.

I always thought the Spainish-American war more cleanly fit that claim though as claiming overseas colonial possessions clearly exceeded the entire manifest destiny concept and was attempting to resemble a europeon colonial empire.

So, I agree with everything you’re saying.

To clarify. I’m thinking about Protestantism in its German origins long before America. During the reformation we see some radical groups pop up promoting various ideas of radical egalitarianism that later on get picked up by some enlightenment thinkers. But imho you don’t really see the fully fleshed out form of the ideology that we would consider radical revolutionary leftism that begins to resemble Marxist-Leninism until the French Revolution.
