Recently I was working on the Viviliques (the species I created) and decided since they're not organic, the hair would be part of their bodies. So...

The hair could be used for combat, acting like antennae. It can sense vibrations on the air and react to stimuli. Besides, since it's made of micro cristals and metal, it can get hard, working as a shield.
