The total trade in goods & services deficit (excl. precious metals) widened by £8.6 billion to £27.9 billion in the three months to May 2022.

Total imports of goods (excl. precious metals) increased by £2.2 billion (4.2%) in May and total exports of goods (excl. precious metals) increased by £2.3 billion (7.4%).

Goods exports to the EU reached £16.9bn in May, the highest level since records began; likely related to rising prices in 2022.
Removing the effect of inflation, EU exports rose to £13.9bn in May, the highest since Dec 2020.

Net financial flows increased in Q1 2022, with a net inflow to the UK of £29.6 billion (4.8% of GDP). These inflows are lower than the net borrowing from rest of the world implied by the current account deficit.

Russia was the UK’s largest supplier of refined oil in 2021, however it fell to the 6th largest in April 2022 as importers seek alternatives following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
