The Forgotten Christians of Egypt

Coptic Christians, who briefly felt hope during the Arab Spring, now face renewed marginalization under President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi’s regime.

While often praised internationally for delivering stability, the government draws sharp criticism for its authoritarian repression and treatment of religious minorities.

A Decade of Authoritarianism
More than ten years ago, Egypt’s military ended the country’s brief democratic experiment.

In July 2013, General Abdel Fattah el-Sisi—then both Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and Minister of Defense seized power with the public backing of Coptic Pope Tawadros II.

Yet el-Sisi has largely failed the country’s estimated 15 million Copts, the largest Christian community in the Middle East.

Egypt has rarely known genuine liberty or democracy across its long history.

The 2011 overthrow of Hosni Mubarak raised hopes, but the elected president Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood governed poorly and pursued an Islamist agenda that alienated many Egyptians.

El-Sisi, originally appointed by Morsi, ousted him with financial and political support from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

He quickly proved a more ruthless authoritarian than Mubarak.

The new regime launched a sweeping crackdown. Security forces violently cleared pro-Morsi protesters from Rab’a Square, killing over 800 people in one incident.

Tens of thousands were arrested, torture became widespread, and independent NGOs monitoring abuses were shut down.

Freedom House continues to rate Egypt as “Not Free,” noting that meaningful political opposition has been crushed, civil liberties restricted, and security forces operate with impunity.

Human Rights Watch has documented systematic repression of critics, harsh pretrial detention, unfair trials, and flawed elections lacking real competition.

Persistent Discrimination Against Coptic Christians
Despite Coptic support for el-Sisi’s removal of the Muslim Brotherhood government, conditions for Christians have not meaningfully improved.

Christianity in Egypt predates Islam by centuries. Copts trace their heritage to ancient Egyptians and the early Church of Alexandria.

They constitute a larger share of the population than Christians elsewhere in the region (outside Lebanon), yet they endure widespread discrimination and violence.

The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has highlighted ongoing restrictions on freedom of religion or belief. These affect Coptic Christians, Baha’is, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Qur’anists, nonbelievers, and others.

Problems include barriers to building or repairing churches, blasphemy prosecutions, and sectarian violence that often goes unpunished particularly in rural Upper Egypt.

Blasphemy laws are disproportionately used against Christians.

Studies show a significant percentage of cases target Copts, often for perceived insults to Islam or even routine religious expression.

Church construction remains hampered by bureaucracy, leading to delays, closures, and sometimes mob attacks. Customary “reconciliation” sessions frequently favor Muslim parties and result in Christians being pressured to leave their homes.

Reports also document the abduction, rape, and forced conversion of Coptic girls and women, with little accountability.

Legal barriers compound the issue. Egyptian IDs record religious affiliation, and conversion from Islam is effectively impossible under interpretations of Sharia that hold supremacy in the constitution.

This creates second class status for religious minorities in personal status matters, and daily life.

U.S. Policy and Regional Implications
Successive U.S. administrations have treaded lightly on Egypt’s human rights record. Egypt remains a nominal ally, and Gulf funding has reduced the leverage of American aid.

Tolerating religious persecution undermines long term stability and national unity in Egypt.
