About 75 years ago, scientists accidentally synthesised 'ferrocene', in which the iron (Fe) atom is sandwiched between two C5H5 rings. Now, IISc & IITM researchers have created a carbon-free boron alternative to ferrocene for the first time.

Combining molecular design with a polymer environment, IISc researchers created a transparent material that exhibits bright, persistent afterglow at room temperature. It allows temperature-dependent tuning of light emission & reaches ~92% efficiency.

IISc researchers have engineered improved fluorescent molecular rotors as sensitive probes. A selenium-based variant showed the widest sensing range and strong detection of amyloid-β aggregates, opening new doors to study diseases like Alzheimer’s.
