Well, this changes the story considerably.

The initial headlines called this a “glacial collapse.” Satellite analysis now indicates the major failure was a massive bedrock collapse beneath the glacier.

That distinction matters. This was fundamentally a geologic mass-failure event involving bedrock, which then mobilized ice, rock, sediment, and water downstream... not simply a glacier spontaneously collapsing because of warming.

Yet people were almost immediately declaring it another climate-change disaster.

STOP BLAMING A CHINESE DAM.

The evidence is clear: this disaster originated with a massive ice-rock/glacier collapse in NEPAL near Langtang Lirung. The debris then tore down the valley, crossed into Tibet, and devastated the border region.

Hydropower infrastructure was DESTROYED BY the disaster... it didn't cause it.

I've spent considerable time in Tibet around Chinese hydroelectric development. The major projects people are blaming are nowhere near this collapse site.
