Kakali Ghosh, councillor of Ward No. 8 in Mathabhanga town, has begun returning money allegedly collected as "cut money" following accusations that she extorted lakhs of rupees from residents. @KamalikaSengupt reports that on Friday night, she returned ₹1 lakh to four individuals.
Residents had alleged that money was extracted through intimidation and pressure tactics, with demands linked to housing scheme benefits and even personal family circumstances.
Ghosh, however, has denied personally collecting the money, alleging that Trinamool Youth leader Nayanjyoti Saha took the money in her name and through her influence. She said the ₹1 lakh returned on Friday was only the first installment and that the remaining amount would be repaid in phases!!!
