“On October 5, 1937, Franklin Roosevelt did something that still gives me goosebumps to this day. He secretly visited a struggling single mother named Mary Thompson in a tiny walk-up apartment in Brooklyn after reading her heartbreaking letter about losing her factory job and being unable to feed her three children.
When she opened the door and saw the President of the United States standing there with a basket of groceries and an envelope containing a personal check, she literally fainted.
But here’s what makes this story truly magical: Roosevelt didn’t simply leave the food and walk away after a photo opportunity. He actually sat at her worn kitchen table for more than an hour, rocking her baby on his lap and helping her older children with their homework.
He told her about his fear of not being good enough after contracting polio, about how he woke up some mornings wondering whether he could keep going.
And in that cramped little kitchen, the most powerful man in the world and a woman who felt completely powerless shared their fears — and somehow, both emerged stronger.
What absolutely stunned me was that Franklin Roosevelt made the Secret Service promise never to reveal the visit to the press.
As he reportedly put it:
‘This isn't about politics. It's about one human being helping another. And the moment we turn genuine compassion into a publicity stunt, we lose something sacred.’
And he continued visiting ordinary Americans in this way throughout his presidency — more than 200 unannounced home visits, according to Eleanor Roosevelt's personal papers.
He would simply bring groceries, pay overdue rent, sit with elderly people, and always ask the Secret Service to wait outside because he wanted those moments to be real, unforced — just two human beings connecting without the burden of his office.
Mary Thompson kept that evening a secret until Roosevelt's death. Only then did she finally tell a reporter:
‘He came into my home not as a president, but as a father who understood what it meant to be afraid. And when he left, he hugged me and whispered that being a good mother to my children was the most important job in America, more important than anything he did.’
‘I believed him because I could see in his eyes that he meant every single word.’
And that is the legacy of Roosevelt that should inspire us most.
True greatness is not measured by monuments or history books, but by the quiet moments when you use whatever power you have to make even one person feel seen, valued, and less alone in their struggle.”
“Beneath the armor that so many teenagers build around themselves to avoid suffering lies the desire to love and be loved,” Pope Leo XIV said on October 22 to participants in the International Congress for Pastoral Care in Schools and Universities, taking place at the Vatican.
In his address he urged those present to encourage young people and help them “become protagonists of a new way of inhabiting the world, builders of fraternity and of a more just society.”
Women are over half the population, but research on women’s health has always been underfunded and understudied. It’s clear that women have been seeking healthcare in a medical world largely designed for men.
No more! We are righting that wrong and making sure that no woman ever has to hear, “It’s all in your head” or “It’s just stress” ever again! #womenshealthmatters
Taking children into the forest, explaining to them that trees are alive, communicate with other trees, sleep at night, and produce the oxygen we breathe, awakens an understanding that is important for the environment. Only what is understood will be treated with respect.💚🌲🌳🍀
Jim Jordan was involved in Trump's conspiracy to steal the election and seize power; he urged that Pence refuse to count lawful electoral votes. If Rs nominate Jordan to be Speaker, they will be abandoning the Constitution. They’ll lose the House majority and they’ll deserve to.
All Americans should be horrified and outraged by the brazen terrorist attacks on Israel and the slaughter of innocent civilians. We grieve for those who died, pray for the safe return of those who’ve been held hostage, and stand squarely alongside our ally, Israel, as it dismantles Hamas. As we support Israel’s right to defend itself against terror, we must keep striving for a just and lasting peace for Israelis and Palestinians alike.
NEW: A New York trial court judge has found that Trump, his adult sons, and Allen Weisselberg engaged in a persistent, years-long fraud through “fantasy world” valuations of core Trump assets, including his own residence and various golf courses and office buildings. 1/
Let me be clear:
If the government shuts down, members of the U.S. military are going to have to continue to work but not get paid.
Extreme House Republicans are playing politics with our servicemembers and their families.
Wow. As President Biden is in Michigan to support unions, “Speaker” McCarthy just released a new budget that includes 1 MILLION children losing food help, 60K seniors losing Meals on Wheels, 80% cut to low-income schools, & 70% cut to heating assistance. Republicans don’t care.
A government shutdown could impact everything from food safety to cancer research to Head Start programs for children.
Funding the government is one of the most basic responsibilities of Congress.
It’s time for Republicans to start doing the job America elected them to do.
