Two Eastern European men have been jailed in Ireland's first conviction for labour exploitation-based human trafficking.
Georgijs Poniza (37), believed to be of Latvian origin, received a 13-year sentence. Armen Pogosyan (30), of Armenian nationality from Uzbekistan, received a 13-year sentence with the final two years suspended.
The pair trafficked seven vulnerable Latvian victims (six men and one woman) to south Donegal between December 2020 and October 2023. They lured them with false promises of high pay, good housing, and no bills, then forced them into substandard accommodation—unheated, overcrowded, without proper bedding—while subjecting them to threats, violence, long hours, and extreme exploitation.
Victims scavenged bins for food, had wages stolen (total loss around €750,000), passports seized, and faced arbitrary deductions for rent, fake charges, and even funeral costs. They endured physical assaults, humiliation, and conditions likened to slavery.
Donegal Circuit Court Judge John Aylmer described it as a joint enterprise with high planning, premeditation, and significant psychological harm to the victims, who were targeted due to their impoverished backgrounds in Latvia.
Both men pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including seven counts of trafficking each, plus money laundering and forgery. The landmark case highlights Eastern European networks exploiting fellow migrants for labour in Ireland.
Ireland - Dublin 🇮🇪
Gardai finally do a bit of actual police work and arrest a migrant causing havoc on the street.
At least it’s one less walking the streets, but no doubt he’ll be back out soon and given a free house on the back of the Irish taxpayer.
Let me be clear, we want them out, we want them ALL out ☘️

This is the Belfast I know and love. Over 5,000 people gathered chanting "refugees are welcome here".

Irish writing features prominently on bookshelves all over the world.
This year we celebrate Bloomsday & Beyond with booksellers who explain why writing from Ireland, the island of writers, resonates so strongly with their readers.
This is absolutely an unbelievable exchange...our politicians think they are above us all...the sheer snobbery and condescending tone talking to one of the very few good journalists in Ireland

"The very dull, white, pasty Ireland that I grew up in": Compilation of Irish politicians discussing "white privilege", how Ireland is "a racist society", and more:
Recent events at the Citywest migrant hotel in Dublin are just the tip of the iceberg.
Riots have been happening there for years.
The Irish government wants you to accept this as a normal part of life in modern, multicultural Ireland.
Migrant in Ireland steals a woman’s phone and tries to run away, but these Irish men chase after him instead!
Natives have had enough of the lawlessness that these migrants bring to their country!
If the government isn’t going to protect them, they will do it themselves!
Ireland - Dublin 🇮🇪
Algerian migrant animal Riad Bouchaker, was “hell bent” on attacking as many children as he could in Dublin on November 23, 2023.
He should NEVER have been in Ireland in the first place.
We want him out, we want them ALL out!
