Borderline (2025) is a horror-comedy film loosely inspired by a real-life stalking case involving pop legend Madonna. In 1996, a violent man was convicted and sentenced to ten years in prison for stalking and threatening Madonna's life, reportedly telling her bodyguard he intended to slit her throat if she refused to marry him. The man later escaped from a mental hospital but was quickly recaptured before causing any further harm. The film reimagines this disturbing true story, following a delusional fan named Paul (Ray Nicholson) who escapes a mental institution and breaks into the home of fictional 1990s pop star Sofia (Samara Weaving), convinced they are destined to be married. Sofia, a clear stand-in for Madonna, must fight for her survival with the help of her loyal bodyguard Bell (Eric Dane), while sports star DeVante Rhodes (Jimmie Fails) serves as a loose reimagining of Dennis Rodman, who had a brief but highly publicized relationship with Madonna in 1994. Written and directed by Jimmy Warden, known for writing Cocaine Bear, the film marks his feature directorial debut and is produced by the team behind Barbie and Saltburn. Notably, Warden and lead actress Samara Weaving are married in real life. While the film received mixed critical reviews, with some feeling its darkly comedic tone clashed with the weight of its true-crime origins, the performances of its two leads were widely praised. Borderline was released in theaters and on digital on March 14, 2025.
