The Retablo Mayor is the largest altarpiece in the world, a monumental Gothic woodcarving masterpiece. Designed by the Flemish sculptor Pieter Dancart in 1482, the structure took nearly 80 years to complete, finishing in 1564 with contributions from artists like Pedro Millán and Jorge Fernández Alemán. 

Measuring approximately 20 meters (65 feet)high and 23 meters (75 feet) wide, the altarpiece is covered in gold leaf and features 45 carved scenes from the Old Testament and the lives of Christ and the Virgin Mary, containing over 200 polychrome figures.  It is crowned by a 14th-century Gothic Calvary featuring the Christ of the Million crucifix and centers on a silver-coated sculpture of the Virgin of the See (Santa María de la Sede), the cathedral's patron saint.
