Last week, $META jumped 9% on a report it was planning to sell its “excess” compute, and neoclouds like $CRWV & $NBIS sold off…I asked one question, what excess?

Today Meta answered. It’s investing ~$10 billion to build its first data center in Canada, a full gigawatt in Sturgeon County, Alberta, largely powered by natural gas. It’s AI “models” and the Family of Apps running on it.

So a company with genuinely excess capacity doesn’t break ground on another gigawatt. You don’t build more of what you already have too much of. Therefore one of two things is true, and both are more interesting than last week’s pop…or the street’s narrative of hyperscalers are cutting on Capex (not true btw)

Either the “excess” never existed and the cloud story was what it looked like…a reframing exercise that turned a feared cost center into a celebrated revenue line for exactly one news cycle, while the capex machine never even slowed down.

Today’s $10B says the machine is accelerating because the technology is way too important & powerful to not spend to get ahead.

Or Meta is building capacity to sell…in which case this isn’t a social media company hedging its overbuild.

It’s a company quietly becoming a neocloud with 4 billion users attached, and the Alberta site is inventory, not insurance just like what $SPCX did with Tennessee’s datacenters (ended up selling them to $GOOGL & Anthropic at a premium).

That’s a genuinely different company than the one the market thinks it owns with genuinely different margins, capex intensity, and competition.

Also on “natural gas”(?)…A gigawatt campus in Alberta, gas fueled, because that’s where power is available and permittable.

The binding constraint on AI isn’t only chips anymore and everyone building at scale knows it, it’s compute & electrons.

So meaning, Meta didn’t pick Canada for the weather. It picked it for the grid because ours sucks and old.

The capex is globalizing not slowing as these so called analysts would like to portray it.
