Following the passing of Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri assumed office as the 2nd Prime Minister of India.

Soft-spoken yet firm in conviction, Shastri ji led the nation during one of its most challenging periods and earned immense respect for his humility, integrity, and leadership.

It was under his leadership that the iconic slogan:

**"Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan"**

became a rallying call for the nation—honoring both the soldiers who protect India and the farmers who feed it.

Despite his simple lifestyle and modest personality, his impact on India's history remains profound.

More than six decades later, Lal Bahadur Shastri continues to be remembered as a symbol of honesty, selfless service, and dedication to the nation.

A leader who proved that true strength does not need to be loud.

The historic breakthrough of the Zojila Tunnel marks the fulfilment of a long-cherished dream of the people of Ladakh. Today is not merely an engineering milestone; it is an emotional moment for every family that has endured the hardships of winter isolation for generations.

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji, Hon’ble Home Minister Shri Amit Shah Ji, and Hon’ble Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways Shri Nitin Gadkari Ji for making this historic day possible and for bringing immense joy to the people of Ladakh. Their vision, commitment, and unwavering support have transformed a decades-old aspiration into reality.

I wish to place on record my special appreciation for Shri Nitin Gadkari Ji, whose dynamic leadership, personal commitment, and constant monitoring have played a pivotal role in ensuring the rapid progress of this strategically important project. Under his able stewardship, the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has accelerated infrastructure development across the country, and the Zojila Tunnel stands as a shining example of his determination to complete transformative projects in the shortest possible time. His relentless efforts and proactive approach have brought this dream closer to reality for the people of Ladakh.

This tunnel is a lifeline for Ladakh, particularly for the people of Kargil, who have long faced immense challenges during the harsh winter months. For decades, all-weather connectivity through Zojila remained a cherished dream, and generations of Ladakhis struggled and advocated tirelessly to make it a reality.

I congratulate the people of Ladakh on this landmark achievement. The days of prolonged winter isolation, uncertainty, and hardship are now coming to an end. The Zojila Tunnel will open a new chapter of connectivity, economic growth, tourism, development, national integration, and prosperity for our region.

I also pay tribute to all those leaders and public representatives who consistently raised this issue and fought for it over the years. I particularly acknowledge the immense contribution of Jenab Qambar Ali Akhone, one of the foremost leaders who played a crucial role in initiating and pursuing the demand for the Zojila Tunnel project. During his tenure as Transport Minister, he consistently and persistently advocated for all-weather connectivity to Ladakh and was among the most important voices in laying the foundation for this historic project.

I also acknowledge the contributions of Jenab Hassan Khan, who repeatedly raised the issue in Parliament, Jenab Omar Abdullah, who strongly advocated for improved connectivity and the Zojila Tunnel project during the erstwhile Jammu & Kashmir Government, and Shri Thupstan Chewang, who raised the matter on several occasions in Parliament. I also remember all those leaders, activists, and citizens whose dedication, sacrifices, and unwavering commitment kept this dream alive. Their collective efforts, spanning decades, have culminated in this historic achievement for the people of Ladakh.

I also extend my heartfelt congratulations and sincere appreciation to the entire team of NHIDCL, including its leadership, Managing Director (MD), General Managers, engineers, technical experts, officers, and all associated staff whose tireless efforts and dedication have made this historic milestone possible.

A special word of appreciation is due to Shri Krishna Reddy and the entire team of Mega Engineering & Infrastructure Ltd., including the Project Heads, engineers, technical personnel, operators, supervisors, and workers who worked relentlessly to turn this dream into reality. Constructing a tunnel of this magnitude under some of the most challenging geographical, climatic, and operational conditions in the world is no ordinary achievement.

An 800-kg wild gaur walked more than 300 km across Tamil Nadu, from the forests of Trichy to the shores of Pamban. What followed was one of the most complex wildlife operations undertaken in the state. After a month of tracking the animal through human-dominated landscapes, and when all efforts to guide it back to suitable habitat failed, the Tamil Nadu Forest Department carried out the state’s first long-distance gaur translocation. Nearly 100 personnel, including expert veterinarians and trackers, worked in challenging coastal terrain to safely tranquilize, transport and release the animal in a Reserve Forest in Dindigul after a 13-hour capture operation and a 9-hour journey. Translocating a gaur is among the most challenging wildlife management tasks. This successful operation marks a significant milestone in conflict mitigation and wildlife management, while providing valuable lessons for future human-wildlife conflict situations. Kudos to the entire team 👏👏💪

NHAI's emergency response team promptly assisted a National Highway user following a medical emergency near the South Portal of the Banihal-Qazigund Tunnel yesterday evening.

Upon receiving information at around 7:22 PM regarding a suspected heart attack suffered by a NH user while travelling towards Srinagar, an NHAI ambulance equipped with Advanced Life Support facilities was immediately dispatched to the location. The medical team provided CPR and emergency care on-site before shifting the patient to SDH Banihal for further treatment.

Owing to the swift response and medical assistance provided by the emergency team, the patient is currently stable and under observation.

NHAI remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of National Highway users through round-the-clock emergency response services.
