Justice Dipankar Datta made the remarks while hearing a plea seeking premature release of a life convict whose death sentence had been commuted to life imprisonment after a prolonged delay in deciding his mercy petition.

“Forgive, forgive, forgive — you have to draw a line somewhere,” Justice Datta said, recalling a case where a father raped and murdered his elder daughter, later killed his wife after being released on parole, and still had his subsequent death sentence commuted to life imprisonment.
