India's indigenous Kaveri 2.0 engine is gaining momentum as the future powerplant for the Tejas fighter, aiming to gradually reduce dependence on the American GE F404 that was sourced from the US. With everything proceeding as per plan, the engine will come into the picture when the Tejas Mk1A undergoes its mid-life upgrade, which will represent another huge step in the path towards self-reliance in defence and aerospace engineering.

Initially launched in the 1980s, the Kaveri engine project encountered multiple problems due to inadequate thrust, faulty turbines, and the absence of modern facilities for testing. These factors forced India to use GE F404 engines in Tejas planes. However, rather than giving up, DRDO and GTRE started developing the engine anew using new materials, more effective afterburners, and better government funding, reviving one of India's most ambitious defence projects.
