The plight of tomato farmers echoed in the Assam Legislative Assembly on Wednesday as BJP MLA Mrinal Saikia urged the government to address the widening gap between the prices received by farmers and those paid by consumers. While raising the issue in the House, Saikia displayed a 100-gram bottle of tomato sauce to highlight the disparity in the value chain.
Holding up the bottle, the MLA pointed out that it was priced at Rs 80, while tomato farmers were receiving just Re 1 per kilogram for their produce during the same period, even as tomatoes were being sold in retail markets for Rs 20 to Rs 30 per kg.
