There is something called ripple effect.

Had Messi been sent off for that foul, it would have greatly impacted on the game. Maybe Argentina goes on to win 1 -0. Maybe Algeria males a 2 - 1 comeback. Maybe another player gets to win the MOTM. It entirely means that Algeria was robbed.
