In the comments section of a post I made it’s obvious that many do not know the terminology SpaceX use.
They seem to believe the v3 internet satellites on last Starship can do direct to cell.
They can not. SpaceX has plans for a v2 D2C satellite that is Starship compatible but it has not been launched. Nor produced.
It probably needs an ASIC chip designed first.
Here is a rough size comparison and again one of these - the Starship compatible v2 D2C - hasn’t even been produced yet.
The others has all made it to orbit.
*I edited the size of the SpaceX v2 D2C satellite servicelink array after comments, it’s now more to scsle with available renders*
$ASTS: ICYMI this is the plan for Blocks 2 and 3. The next gen larger satellites likely come way later than this.
There should be a minimum of ~96 of each of Block 2 and Block 3 for global low band + global mid band continuous coverage. Plus more for polar orbits and additional capacity.

Eh I disagree
They have more than enough funding to push on every front at once
You have to start R&D now to have the next generation ready by the time you’re done producing and launching the current satellites
R&D costs should be pretty miniscule in the grand scheme. R&D totalled 15M in Q1 and Q2 2026 combined. We have 3.7B in cash and liquidity.
$ASTS: 🚨@AST_SpaceMobile job post confirms:
1) Confirmation of next generation BIGGER array
2) Lanham, MD office moving to Arlington, VA in Q2 2027

$ASTS: “Initial, intermittent coverage targeted before year-end 2026 in the U.S. and other key markets around the world.”
This comes one day after the tweet hiccup. I think this reiteration of initial intermittent coverage by year end 2026 just locked in my theory that the Rakuten tweet edit was just a communications/legal issue and not a technical issue related to backing out of initial service in 2026.
Also, nice to see @AST_SpaceMobile stepping up the marketing. This week we got a PR or tweet every day except Wednesday. 👀
The AST SpaceMobile network is taking shape, in orbit and on the ground.
Today, over 60 gateways are in various stages of completion, installation and planning worldwide.
Initial, intermittent coverage targeted before year-end 2026 in the U.S. and other key markets around the world.
A new layer of connectivity, designed to connect directly to the smartphones people already use.

@Rick_in_Miami@AST_SpaceMobile I’m guessing not.
I’m guessing AST is working with Grain to use the spectrum until SpaceX’s low band build out is ready to use.
$ASTS $SPCX: 🚨@AST_SpaceMobile requests STA renewal with Grain Management's 800 MHz spectrum
AST SpaceMobile requests renewal of its 30-day Special Temporary Authorization (“STA”)2 to continue operations at 817-824 MHz (uplink) and 862-869 MHz (downlink) for purposes of testing, evaluating, and demonstrating the AST SpaceMobile network’s broadband supplemental coverage from space (“SCS”) capabilities with its authorized in-orbit nongeostationary orbit satellite constellation.
Kinda confusing and interesting that this renewal is occurring as @SpaceX and Grain already announced their definitive agreement. Although the transaction is subject to @FCC approval and other customary closing conditions, I don't think there is much question as to whether or not the transaction will be approved.
Maybe a nothingburger, but I am sharing for discussion and visibility.

@Aambeiennoedel@5xSuitor Yes. They have already started making microns for Block 3 (mid band).
These next generation larger satellites should be a version well beyond.
Block 4 is supposed to be C band but i think larger array is better used on low band. So maybe this big one is Block 5?
Likely to support expanding defense work. Arlington puts them next to the Pentagon, DoD, SDA and MDA offices for easier contract collaboration and meetings after recent awards like the $30M HALO demo and SHIELD IDIQ. NoVA also offers a denser pool of cleared talent and defense-tech partners than Lanham’s NASA-centric area.
$ASTS: Hey @grok see the post above and the provided screenshot. Speculate why @AST_SpaceMobile would want to move their Lanham, MD office to Arlington, VA, in Q2 2027.
