A few months ago, I was visiting Nigeria. On this particular day, I decided to use public transportation in Ibadan something I actually enjoy doing whenever I'm back home.
Around Cocoa House, I boarded a keke (tricycle) heading from Dugbe to Mokola. Two older men, both well over 60 if I had to guess were already seated in the back. I got in and sat down without saying anything.
As soon as the keke started moving, the man sitting next to me turned and said, “Ṣé ẹ ní kí wá ní? basically asking, “Won’t you greet us?”
I looked at him thinking What? I don’t know you from anywhere. Of course I kept that thought to myself. Instead, I replied in English, “Sorry, I don’t understand what you're saying.”
Since they clearly didn't speak English, they probably assumed I wasn't Yoruba and that was why I hadn't greeted them. Fast forward to Mokola. As I got to my stop, I turned to the driver and said in Yoruba, “Ó wà o.”
The two older men immediately looked at me like 😳🤣😂. They just stared, completely speechless, as if I had personally offended them.
Now I'm curious: did I really do something wrong?
The way many older folks in Nigeria insist on greetings and what they consider respect is something I'll never fully understand. Apparently, not greeting complete strangers can be treated like a serious offense. 😂 Mtcheew
Is it true?
I hear some big accounts are locking their comment sections to unverified accounts because of the monetization payable impression.
I think it makes no sense. What do you think?
In fact, all unverified accounts, gather here, we love you, let's grow together.
Message to unverified followers. Are you guys ready to level up. I am ready to help. I have some unverified users account on my table. The lucky ones will be getting their blue-tick these week. Congratulation in advance 🦅
I’m not really materialistic until you realize my wishlist consists of things with deeds, titles, and equity attached to them. 😂 Oh, and vehicles that look like they could survive the apocalypse.
