Incredibly excited to be starting medical school this summer at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine!
Forever grateful for my family, friends, mentors, and all those who have poured into me and helped me get to this point. I wouldn’t be here without you!
Our IU students paused the Newman Center Christmas party to watch the Heisman announcement. Congratulations, Fernando!
What a special night also for our Catholic students when the guy they know from and see every week at Mass wins the Heisman.
Really good question from @M_Shelton33 today about the intersection of David Braun’s faith and his role as the head coach of Northwestern football, and whether the overlap could be discouraging for non-Christian athletes within his program. Here was his response:
The world needs honest and courageous entrepreneurs and communicators who care for the common good. We sometimes hear the saying: “Business is business!” In reality, it is not so. No one is absorbed by an organization to the point of becoming a mere cog or a simple function. Nor can there be true humanism without a critical sense, without the courage to ask questions: "Where are we going? For whom and for what are we working? How are we making the world a better place?"
Technological innovation can be a form of participation in the divine act of creation. It carries an ethical and spiritual weight, for every design choice expresses a vision of humanity. The Church therefore calls all builders of #AI to cultivate moral discernment as a fundamental part of their work—to develop systems that reflect justice, solidarity, and a genuine reverence for life.
I would like to invite each of you, dear young people, to say to the Lord: “Thank you, Jesus, for calling me. My desire is to remain one of your friends, so that, by embracing you, I may also be a companion on the journey for anyone I meet. Grant, O Lord, that those who meet me may encounter you, even through my limitations and frailties.” #JubileeOfYouth
Let us ask from the Holy Spirit the gift of #Peace. Peace begins in our hearts, for only a peaceful heart can spread peace in the family, society, and international relations. May the Spirit of the Risen Christ open paths of reconciliation wherever there is war. May He enlighten those who govern and give them the courage to take steps toward de-escalation and dialogue.

Please read this complete statement on the anti-DEI and anti-immigrant policies that are being implemented in the United States. Simply - we challenge EVERY medical society to align with us and help us moving forward. — FOR our patient populations!!

Premed students are asking me:
What is the point of staying in the United States for medical training?
Getting all these loans and at the end of your training being told that you’re a DEI hire.
They are absolutely not wrong to think this way, and I believe strongly we are going to lose talent.
I know we have severely underserved patient populations of all backgrounds. We need as many doctors as we can. We’re in a physician shortage crisis. There are huge downstream ramifications that are not realized by the current administration.
We need as many talented physicians as we can get and especially those from underrepresented backgrounds to help the underserved populations. The United States has failed us in providing primary care and specialist to underserved areas. That’s really all I can say is I would still encourage you to pursue your dreams to help the underserved patient populations. However, you have to fully understand what you’re getting into by shadowing, reading and learning health policy, and having a strong support system.

To all my physicians that want to stay out of politics.. unfortunately politics has entered your clinic. We need all the help that we can get to help advocate for patients. Businesses are not gonna do it. Health insurance companies not gonna do it. AMA is not going to do it. You being in clinic seeing one patient at a time with your head down and working on notes is not going to do it. We need you with your head up and paying attention and being involved. We have to mobilize and lead.
NU-9, an experimental drug invented at Northwestern, has received an additional $7.3M in research funding from @NIHAging.
NU-9 has already shown promise in reversing ALS—now, the team will explore its effectiveness for other neurodegenerative diseases.
