I have a small, special needs child with severe liver injury admitted with me, who is progressing to liver failure due to prolonged use of antibiotic. Today the father of the child told me that he understood that his child was very sick and that as a special needs child, her life expectancy (severe cerebral palsy) is shorter than her normal peers. But, he told me tearfully, that if my department could help her survive this danger, he would love to spend some more time with her, a bit longer than she is destined to, before he travelled abroad for work and wont see his family for a long time. I am haunted by these words and fighting against all odds. Sometimes, medical science does not win.
