Brexit restored one of the biggest freedoms of all; the freedom to hold our lawmakers to account. The power of our votes. The ability, peacefully through the ballot box, to remove those who make our laws and induce change. In essence, democracy.
#Brexit#democracy
The EU Commission is unelected but has the sole power to propose EU laws; its Council of Ministers can over-rule member govts now in almost all policy areas; its parliament isn't underpinned by a demos (half the actual word "democracy"); yet, together, these institutions hold legal supremacy over elected govts. The EU is dangerously undemocratic & the inevitable political effects are worsening.

"as our upcoming research will show, when the public are presented with various trade offs involved concerning the UK-EU relationship, a more complex picture emerges..." 🤔
The Trade Secretary is expected to say this week that rejoining the EU will not fix issues facing the UK.
We already have the best deal with the EU. We need to focus on making the UK more competitive, incentivising investment and a strong industrial strategy.

The usual suspects have now jumped on this Ipsos Brexit poll. But if you dig just a little deeper the press release says this...
"as our upcoming research will show, when the public are presented with various trade offs involved concerning the UK-EU relationship, a more complex picture emerges..." 🤔
I bet this will show what almost every other poll has shown: support for rejoining the EU falls away when voters are confronted with the likely costs and conditions!

🇬🇧 BRITS CHOOSE TO STAY OUT 🇬🇧
In case you missed this over the weekend.
Polling for The Observer, conducted routinely over the past year, has consistently shown that when given the correct and full set of options, the British public will choose to stay out of the EU. Every time.
Fascinating new polling by @BritainUnbound shows a large majority (60%) do not accept losing UK control over our laws, for more access to the EU market. Growing evidence that @Keir_Starmer's 'EU reset' is just another clumsy gaffe - but will his successor learn?

LATEST POLLING: VOTERS REJECT EU LAWS
As covered this afternoon by The Telegraph - latest polling conducted for Britain Unbound by YouGov shows a majority of British voters will not accept following EU laws, in order to gain greater Single Market access.

Food prices in the EU have risen even more than in the UK. Don't believe those who give you only half the story to blame Brexit and undermine our democracy.
ps. here's a chart showing what has happened to food prices in the UK and EU over this period, indexed to their respective levels in 2015.
(To save anyone asking, the big picture is the same even if you pick a different base year.)
🚨VOTERS WANT TO STAY OUT OF EU🚨
In the latest polling for @ObserverUK published only a few hours ago, conducted by @OpiniumResearch, the British public have switched back and now show a resounding majority for staying out of the EU.
More evidence against the reset... 💥
New YouGov polling for @BritainUnbound find that only 27% of respondents would be willing to accept fewer rule-making powers for the UK in exchange for greater access to the EU single market 👇

I do find that the reader submissions to newspapers often hold gems in them - like this in The Scotsman earlier this week.
Well said Doug Clark from Edinburgh. Well said.
Neither the former East Germany nor Soviet Union required visitors to give entry fingerprints on their borders. But that is the authoritarian direction in which the EU has taken Europe today, fingerprinting travellers as young as 12 years old. Where next?

🇪🇺🇵🇹 The EU's new biometric Entry/Exit System is creating nightmares for Americans & non-EU travelers.
Glitches are causing hours-long fingerprint queues at Lisbon Airport.
This is what happens when bureaucracy replaces real border control.
‘Rather than the economy collapsing as mass ranks of lobotomized Treasury economists said would happen, the economy actually surged forward’
On this week’s Planet Normal @LiamHalligan dismantles the myth of a post-referendum collapse and exposes the truth behind the infamous ‘punishment budget’

Britain left the European Union because democracy is better than authoritarianism.
It's as simple as that.
Narrow debate about the economic impact of #Brexit either way is distinctly secondary.

A big poll swing like this after rejoining the EU is debated, plus support tanking to around 36% if rejoining includes the euro, shows that a repeat referendum would still be ultra high risk for rejoiners. Imagine losing again?

REJOIN SINKING IN POLLS
The Rejoiners are having an atrocious week. Yesterday @LordAshcroft released his latest polling on EU sentiment:
61% - Euro obligation unacceptable
66% - any increase in membership fee unacceptable
67% - would have to be a referendum
The UK is pulling in a disproportionate share of European capital.
Dealroom data shows the UK has raised $13.9bn in 2026 YTD, equal to 48% of all European VC funding, far above its long-run average of 35.5%.
UK startups raised $23.6bn in VC funding in 2025, up 35% from 2024 — the first annual increase in four years and the UK’s third-highest year ever for VC investment.
London has also regained its position as Europe’s leading tech hub, overtaking Paris in Dealroom’s 2026 Global Tech Ecosystem Index, driven by AI and deep tech investment.
The UK now has a tech ecosystem valued at around $1.2tn, more than 200 unicorns, and remains Europe’s strongest venture capital market.
Only one poll, but still striking how support for rejoining the EU is weakening now that more people are talking about it and the costs and conditions are becoming clearer... 👇
Shame economists like @LiamHalligan & @julianHjessop have to keep explaining the lack of evidence Brexit has harmed the UK economy as well as the positive evidence Brexit has if anything, benefited UK trade.
But I am glad they are persevering.
For example, please read this🧵
Big poll swing to "Stay out / Leave" after the Labour leadership contenders pushed an EU membership debate into the headlines over the past week or so. Confirms voters aren't nearly as keen on the EU as continuity Remainers like to think.
