In an interview with me this week on Arise Prime Time, NDC chieftain Buba Galadima alleged that opposition candidates are being offered these sums:

₦50m. ₦200m. ₦500m. ₦2bn - plus vehicles in some cases - to withdraw from the 2027 race and leave APC candidates to contest unopposed.

He further alleged that money was being distributed from a hotel in Abuja and claimed some candidates had already accepted payments. Those allegations have not been independently verified.

But if political competition can allegedly be negotiated with cash, what happens to the voter’s choice?

And if the government says Nigerians are embracing the reforms, while The Economist says public discontent is growing and the Presidency calls that analysis “intellectual fraud”, which Nigeria will voters actually decide in 2027?

The Nigeria of official statistics, the Nigeria of lived hardship, or the Nigeria of political money and machinery?

And at what point does the battle for votes become a battle over whether voters get a genuine choice and a competitive election they can trust the result?

I’m not diagnosing Cristiano Ronaldo. I’m describing behaviour.

And his extraordinary 1,740 word tantrum provides quite the case study.

This entire saga began because a 41 year old footballer was told he might play 30 minutes for Portugal and then didn't. Jorge Jesus changed his mind during a match. Ronaldo considered this betrayal worthy of a manifesto.

Then comes the truly extraordinary part.

Ronaldo reveals that a document was prepared detailing what Jesus should say publicly. Among the proposed lines was an apology for warming up someone of the "stature of Pele or Diego Maradona" without bringing him on.

Imagine the staggering vanity required to approve those words about yourself and then publish them believing they strengthen your case.

Portugal created this monster.

For years they indulged Ronaldo, massaged the ego and hoped Father Time might eventually introduce the realism nobody around him possessed the courage to provide.

They waited too long.

Last week I asked whether anybody in Portuguese football had the balls to tell Ronaldo his time was up.

Jorge Jesus finally did.

Ronaldo responded like a pampered child being told no. He left the camp, blamed others and has now produced nearly 2,000 words explaining why Cristiano Ronaldo remains the victim in the continuing tragedy of Cristiano Ronaldo.

He even wants "one or more farewell matches". Naturally. Apparently even his goodbye requires a tour.

An extraordinary footballer has become a deeply embarrassing spectacle.

Father Time won.

Ronaldo simply cannot accept the result.

✍️ P.S. Last time I dared question Ronaldo, the cult descended. So, for clarity, as a footballer and athlete he was extraordinary, one of the greatest we've ever seen. I don’t need his goal statistics from the Saudi league waved at me as proof that he somehow remains an elite footballer. My eyes have told me for years that he’s washed at the highest level. His devoted following can continue to delude themselves if they wish. His reputation cannot outrun reality forever.

Diego Maradona remains my GOAT, but I am humble enough to accept that Messi has achieved a lot more than Diego did, even though I still believe that in terms of pure talent, Diego was more gifted and had a bigger mentality.

I just heard a story that almost made me m@d!💔

Ayo Adio, the ADC Candidate for the Eti-Osa House of Assembly Constituency, visited a community in his constituency to interact with the residents and sell his programmes. But he discovered that they hadn't had light for several months and were struggling to survive in darkness.

He swore to them that he'd resolve the electricity issue by clearing their outstanding bills. The following week, he visited NEPA with the community leaders. He paid off the outstanding debt and brought NEPA officials to reconnect the light.

As the electricity was restored, the community lit up in frenzied joy and jubilation. Word got to the APC representatives in the constituency. The following week, they ordered NEPA to disconnect the light.

As I type, the community is thrown back into darkness - helpless and hopeless. I can’t express how sad and utterly disgusted I feel right now!✍️
