Britain’s oldest sugar factory is to close because of sky-high energy costs. The site at Cantley, in Norfolk, was the first sugar-processing factory to open in the UK and has been operating since 1912. More than 100 people face losing their jobs as part of the closure that will also leave Britain needing to import more sugar from places such as Brazil.

Net Zero... bad for jobs, bad for British industrial heritage, and increasing imports.

Oil and gas industry hopes for a radical change in government policy towards fossil fuels have been dashed. With the incoming administration under pressure to cut household bills, Labour's deputy leader Lucy Powell said that fossil fuels from the North Sea would be part of Britain’s energy mix, but insisted Andy Burnham would not overturn Labour’s manifesto pledge to end new exploration licences in the North Sea.

A net-zero overhaul of Britain’s electricity grid is at risk of becoming “the next HS2” as projects blow their budgets by almost 500pc, leading to higher energy bills for households. Some developers say their total costs are now expected to be almost 500pc above the original estimates.

Builders have accused Ed Miliband of forcing them to install solar panels on houses even when they do not receive any sun. Under the Energy Secretary’s Future Homes Standard, the Government mandates that solar panels on roofs should cover 40pc of the ground-floor area of each new-build house. However, a senior executive at a major housebuilder claimed that the requirement was a “waste of money” because some homeowners will end up buying homes with solar panels that do not generate meaningful amounts of electricity.

Revealing the figure, the CBI urged the incoming prime minister to scrap net zero levies, arguing that doing so could unlock an additional £130bn in growth in the coming decades. However, such a move would require overturning the green policies of Ed Miliband, the Energy Secretary.

All civil servants at the Care Quality Commission, have been handed a “practical guide to help colleagues reduce their carbon footprint while working from home” after three senior staff members completed “Carbon literacy training.” Recommendations include: Reducing screen brightness, choosing low-water plants, like succulents for your workspace, and making sustainable lunches.

Ed Miliband has approved Britain’s second-largest solar farm after overruling opposition from his own inspectors. The Energy Secretary granted planning permission to the One Earth Solar Farm development to be built on prime farmland across Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire. Miliband’s own planning inspectors warned that the scheme would be destructive for the environment, would put historic structures at risk, damage the health and well-being of local people and cause transport problems.

Wasted wind could add £300 to household energy bills by the end of the decade because of a glut of power from turbines, an energy supplier has warned. So many turbines are being built without enough transmission capacity to get their power to consumers that wind farms are being paid to switch off to stop the grid being flooded with power. The current £1.5bn annual cost of paying wind plants to switch off could hit £10bn by 2030 – all of which would be added to bills.

Britain risks fuel shortages over the winter if Andy Burnham fails to approve a new gas project in the North Sea, its operator has said, warning: “If I were the secretary of state for energy security and net zero, I’d be looking closely at where’s my next source of energy security." Adura has invested £1.5bn in Jackdaw in addition to setting up a separate oil drilling project, Rosebank, off the Shetland Islands, before they were blocked by a court ruling.

A Green-led council is planning to force people to cycle to work by scrapping hundreds of free parking spaces as part of a net zero crackdown. Bristol city council, run by a Green-Lib Dem coalition, has drawn up proposals for a levy of up to £1,250 a year on employers who provide free parking for staff commuting by car.

Yet another blow to businesses battling higher costs brought on by Labour’s tax rises, inflation and energy prices.
