@ddmeyer We talked about what graphs were supposed to represent, something we can see quickly and get an idea of a trend, and the only way we can see trends is if we use accurate number lines so we can see things like "jumps" or "flatlines" or others makeshift terms we came up with
I spent my prep period today just reading this and soaking it all up, wanting to implement everything ASAP!! Saw a lot of sessions at #NCTMSD19 about this!
My students were so curious and engaged that I had students during LUNCH solving this problem by @robertkaplinsky, “How Much Money IS That?!” We solved it in class, but they were so excited to share with their friends from different classes how they each solved it! #proudteacher
Listened to the first two episodes of the @MakeMathMoments podcast and I’m so inspired! I’ve been working on the sparking curiosity components of my lessons. Thank you @MathletePearce and @MrOrr_geek for helping me get driven! I’m in a place if need of that right now 😁
I was nervous about having my middle school students having a discussion about “how many chip bags will there be” by @robertkaplinsky, but they all loved it and were respectful towards each other and were so incredibly engaged #BraveBoldMathMove@lockhartedu
As a white male, I've said that I value equity & social justice. Looking back though, I realize that I had opportunities to help, but instead opted out because I didn't want to rock the boat. This article from @KyleKorver mirrors my own journey & how I realize I have to do better
Fifth and final session of the conference for me - Rethinking Cognitive Complexity: Are your Assessments Reaching the Depth of the Math Standards? By @ShelbiCole1 and @drtedcoe. Worked with Ted a few years back with @AMP_AZmath!
Fourth session of the day: Making Math Moments Matter by @MathletePearce (Kyle Pearce) and Jon Orr. Kyle and I met back when I was a first year teacher, so it’s great to reconnect and and I’m excited to see him talk!
Third session of the day: What Does Effective Fraction Intervention Look Like in Middle School or Beyond by Mark Goldstein. My first “burst” session, meaning it’s only 30 minutes. This room is PACKED, showing me older students struggle with fractions no matter where they’re from.
Second session of the day: Math Modeling Can Make You Filthy Rich by the one and only @robertkaplinsky!!! Been looking forward to this all week, I’ve been a fan of him for a looooong time! 🤓
